Samoan to English: keep family relationships and group membership visible

A family word can change with vowel length

Samoan tama can refer to a child or boy, whereas tamā means father. English represents that distinction with completely different words. If a message omits the macron, a translator must resolve the intended relationship from the sentence rather than treating both spellings as one dictionary entry. A school collection message and a message about someone’s father could otherwise identify different people.

Keep the original spelling when pasting family messages. Where a sender has typed without vowel marks, look for the relationship established earlier in the conversation. Do not automatically restore every missing mark by guessing. The English result should identify the intended relative, not merely choose the most frequent reading of an unmarked word.

English we loses information about the listener

Samoan distinguishes a group that includes the person being addressed from one that excludes that person. It also has special pronouns for two people. English we does neither job by itself. When translating an invitation or a travel arrangement, decide whether the English reader needs an explicit explanation of membership.

For example, an inclusive invitation can be expressed as you and I where the source means exactly those two people. An exclusive statement may need the two of us, without you, if the exclusion is the point of the message. These are explanatory options, not replacements to insert mechanically into every sentence. A paragraph may already make the membership clear.

Respectful vocabulary is not a different physical object

The respectful term maota can refer to a house associated with a high chief or minister; ordinary fale also means house. Rendering the former automatically as palace can invent grandeur that the source does not assert. English can preserve a relevant title or describe whose house is meant without changing the building into a royal residence.

This is especially useful in visit arrangements: distinguish a respectful reference to the host from a literal description of the accommodation. If the purpose is a formal introduction, retaining the person’s established title may communicate more than an inflated English noun. The appropriate wording depends on the particular relationship, not a rule that every Samoan reference must sound ceremonial.

Written and conversational forms need different recognition

Samoan conversational pronunciation can differ from conventional written forms, including familiar t-style and k-style distinctions. An informal transcription should therefore not be corrected by indiscriminately replacing letters. Identify the word and its role before deciding whether an unusual form is a typo or a conversational representation.

In the English translation, convey the speaker’s actual request or statement. A conversational pronunciation does not itself justify adding slang, disrespect, or grammatical mistakes. Keep the source’s social tone separate from the English spelling: the aim is an intelligible message with the same participants and relationships.
