Reading the small Romanian forms that English must spell out

Recover the subject before smoothing the sentence

A Romanian message may begin directly with a verb because its ending and the previous exchange identify the speaker. An ordinary complete English statement usually needs a subject. “Ajung mâine” can mean “I’m arriving tomorrow” in a travel exchange. The English I has to be supplied even though the Romanian eu is absent. Do not mistake an unexpressed subject for an impersonal event.

The right English tense also depends on the job the sentence is doing. In an agreed travel plan, a natural English present continuous can express a future arrangement. Romanian does not have to contain a separate counterpart of am plus arriving for that reading. First determine whether the writer reports a routine, a current event, or a plan. Matching the name of a verb tense is less useful than preserving when the event happens.

Hyphens can connect meaningful participants

Romanian short pronouns often join other forms with a hyphen. They may identify who receives something or who is affected by an action. “Mi-a trimis mesajul” can be “He sent me the message” or “She sent me the message,” depending on the previously identified sender. The mi- supplies me; it is not an optional flourish that can be discarded when rewriting the sentence.

Romanian third-person subject information may remain unstated in this example. English often asks for a clearer choice, but a translator must not manufacture the sender’s gender. If the preceding exchange identifies a person, use that information. Otherwise, using an established name or a natural gender-neutral reformulation can be more faithful than an unsupported he or she. Also distinguish grammatical gender attached to an object from information about a human participant.

Familiar-looking vocabulary needs a meaning check

Romanian librărie refers to a bookshop, not normally a library from which readers borrow books. “Ne vedem la librărie” can be “Let’s meet at the bookshop.” Translating the location as library can send someone to a different building. The related-looking English word is therefore a particularly costly shortcut in a meeting arrangement.

Check words of this kind in their actual setting rather than treating every resemblance as suspicious. Many shared-looking words are helpful clues; the problem is assuming that resemblance guarantees the same everyday meaning. A place, a job title, and an administrative document should be identified by their function before you choose a familiar English label. That check is more useful than replacing understandable Romanian wording with unnecessarily technical English.

Retain courtesy through English phrasing

Dumneavoastră can address one person politely even though its verb has plural agreement. An English translation should not automatically introduce several recipients. Where the message is clearly addressed to one customer, retain singular meaning and carry the courtesy through the request or greeting. English you leaves the distinction less visible, but the relationship still matters. A courteous inquiry should remain courteous without adding invented titles, exaggerated deference, or a second person who was never present.

Romanian: translation notes

Romanian definite articles are often attached to the end of nouns. Preserve diacritics such as ș and ț; omitting them can obscure meaning. Check polite dumneavoastră against familiar tu.

English: translation notes

English words such as “bank” and “right” have several meanings. Add a full sentence to help resolve them. English “you” does not distinguish formal address or singular from plural; specify the audience when reviewing the result.
