Punjabi to Bengali: preserve the action while changing agreement
Punjabi gender endings do not need Bengali substitutes
Punjabi often marks gender in adjectives and verbal forms, while Bengali does not reproduce that system of agreement. A Punjabi sentence may reveal that a speaker is male or female even though the most natural Bengali verb does not. Translate the assertion rather than searching for a Bengali feminine or masculine ending to match each Punjabi one.
For example, ਮੈਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ and ਮੈਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ can both become আমি যাই, “I go,” with the Punjabi versions representing male and female speaker agreement respectively. The Bengali sentence has not necessarily lost an essential part of the message. If a particular identity matters to the surrounding discussion, retain it through an established name or description rather than forcing it into Bengali verb morphology.
Distinguish the person from the grammatical gender of an object
Punjabi ਘਰ is masculine and ਕੁਰਸੀ is feminine, but Bengali বাড়ি, “house,” and চেয়ার, “chair,” do not require equivalent masculine and feminine agreement patterns. Do not interpret a Punjabi adjective about a chair as evidence that the owner is female. Identify what each ending agrees with before drawing conclusions about the participants.
This is especially important in a short message that omits repeated names. A translation can become misleading if grammatical evidence about a nearby object is used to choose a person’s identity. Read the earlier sentence or retain an unambiguous reference. Clear Bengali does not require adding gender information merely because Punjabi grammar contained it.
Bengali respect is a choice in the whole sentence
Bengali distinguishes respectful আপনি, familiar তুমি, and more intimate তুই, with matching verb forms. A Punjabi expression of courtesy must therefore be rendered through a coherent Bengali choice. Replacing just the pronoun while leaving a verb at another level can make the result sound inconsistent.
Assess what the source is doing socially. A polite inquiry to an unfamiliar adult needs a different Bengali voice from an exchange between close friends. Avoid automatically selecting the most intimate form because the Punjabi message is brief. Brevity and familiarity are not identical. Conversely, an ordinary family conversation need not be rewritten as a formal announcement.
Gurmukhi words and Bengali words need separate spelling decisions
The source here is Gurmukhi Punjabi, not Shahmukhi. Bengali has its own consonant forms, vowel signs, and joined letter combinations. Copying source sounds can help with a name, but it is not a reliable translation method for ordinary vocabulary. Punjabi ਪਾਣੀ can be Bengali জল or পানি according to the target community and context; familiar usage may differ across Bengali-speaking audiences.
For a service message, use terms the actual recipient recognises. For a person’s name, consult an existing Bengali spelling if one is available instead of treating it like a replaceable vocabulary item. Check the finished text in its destination application, because misplaced-looking vowel signs may be a rendering issue. Preserve reference codes exactly so the Bengali explanation still points to the same booking, document, or payment.
