Persian to Vietnamese: keep the counted item separate from its counting word

A Persian counting expression does not name an extra object

Persian Online illustrates sé jeld ketāb for three bound book items. Jeld supplies a counting unit; it does not add three separate objects called volumes to another three books. A Vietnamese translation should preserve the counted items and their quantity rather than treat each source component as another inventory entry.

The lesson also gives colloquial do tā mard beside formal do mard for two men. The extra counting word does not change the number of people. Conversely, the absence of that word in the formal source does not establish that the target should omit a classifier where its chosen construction uses one.

Vietnamese classifies different counted items differently

Northern Illinois University’s Vietnamese lesson illustrates có hai cái bàn for having two tables and có ba quyển/cuốn từ điển for having three dictionaries. The counting constructions select different classifiers for those item types. A general Persian colloquial counting word does not establish that the same Vietnamese classifier fits every noun.

A Persian list can use a generic counter across objects whose Vietnamese descriptions differ. Translating the list therefore requires identifying the item itself before choosing the target counting expression. Preserving only the digit while attaching a classifier associated with another item can make the phrase unnatural or misleading.

The Vietnamese lesson also shows that a classifier may remain with a number or adjective when the noun is recoverable from context. Such a shortened expression does not necessarily omit the item from the intended inventory. Its reference can continue an already established group, just as the full phrase previously identified the kind of thing counted.

Keep definiteness and grammatical number distinct from the count

The Persian counting lesson illustrates dah ketāb for ten books, with the noun in its singular form after the numeral. A source noun without a plural ending can consequently denote several counted items. Reducing a target quantity to one because the Persian noun looks singular would contradict the numeral.

Persian Online’s object-marker lesson supplies another independent distinction: a specific object phrase can end in rā, including descriptive or possessive material before that marker. The marker’s position does not supply an additional count. The phrase’s referential status and its numerical quantity must be interpreted separately.

For a Persian request concerning particular books already discussed, keep three questions apart: which items the request selects, how many it names and how the target counts that type of item. A classifier can support the Vietnamese expression without being an extra noun in the order, while rā can identify the source object without adding to its quantity.

This direction benefits from reading the entire counted phrase before translating its pieces. A Persian generic counter, a singular-looking noun after a numeral and a Vietnamese classifier can all occur in accurate descriptions of several items. Their forms differ, but the number and identity of the requested objects should remain stable.
