Persian to Tahitian: that notebook may be near the listener rather than far away

Persian this and that identify a contextual referent

The Texas Persian demonstrative lesson illustrates in ketāb, this book, and ān daftar, that notebook. These short expressions can distinguish objects without repeating a longer description. A Tahitian translation needs to preserve which object is indicated, but the Persian contrast alone does not supply every distinction available in the target demonstrative system.

For example, a notebook referred to as that notebook could be beside the person receiving the instruction rather than distant from both people. The source expression can identify it successfully in that shared situation. Translating it with a target form suggesting a distant object could redirect the recipient toward a different notebook.

Tahitian distinguishes proximity to speaker and listener

The French education ministry’s Tahitian curriculum lists teie for proximity to the speaker, tenā for proximity to the interlocutor and terā for distance. It explains that these forms can function as both pronouns and determiners. The target choice can therefore make a speaker-versus-listener distinction that a simple Persian this-versus-that lookup does not settle.

Applied to ān daftar, the translator should identify the notebook’s position in the exchange rather than impose a rule that every ān becomes terā. If the intended notebook is near the recipient, the listener-related distinction is relevant. If it is away from both participants, the distant distinction expresses another spatial relationship.

Pointing or the participants’ shared view can establish that location when the Persian phrase does not spell it out. The demonstrative does not independently identify ownership. A book near the listener may belong to the speaker, and a distant notebook may belong to the listener. The source instruction’s location-based identification should not become a claim about possession simply because one participant is the reference point for the selected target form.

Keep the indicated object count separate from spatial reference

The Persian lesson contrasts in ketāb with in ketāb hā, these books. In retains its form while the noun shows plural marking. Thus a translator cannot infer that an expression identifies only one object merely because the demonstrative itself looks unchanged. The full source phrase supplies the count.

This matters when someone points to several books near a listener and distinguishes them from a notebook farther away. Their number, location and noun identity remain separate facts. Choosing a Tahitian listener-related demonstrative does not resolve how many books the source refers to, just as recognizing Persian plural marking does not select the correct target spatial reference.

For this direction, establish what the Persian demonstrative points to and where that referent stands relative to the participants. Then express the Tahitian proximity distinction without inventing a possessor or changing the number of objects. The target can make the spatial relationship more explicit while preserving the particular book, books or notebook that the original instruction identifies.
