Persian to Swedish: an opening time phrase changes the following clause order

Persian can move yesterday without moving its final verb

The Persian complex-sentence lesson alternates man diruz be sinamā raftam with diruz man be sinamā raftam. Both report the same visit to the cinema yesterday. The time expression can precede the speaker while the going verb remains at the end. A Swedish translation cannot assume that this source change requires only moving the equivalent of yesterday.

Isof’s language advice describes the usual Swedish main-clause order after an opening adverbial: the finite predicate precedes the subject. Its discussion includes måste det ... vara in a clause introduced by a condition. The subject still belongs to that predicate, even though it follows the finite verb.

For a Persian speaker, the important distinction is between the information placed first and the grammatical relationship that follows it. Bringing a time or condition to the front does not make that phrase the actor. The target can put the finite verb before the participant while preserving exactly who performed the action.

A parenthetical explanation is not the main journey

The Persian lesson also describes a journey to a grandfather’s house, inserting an explanation of the house’s location before the final going verb. That inserted clause supplies information about the destination. It is not a second journey performed by the grandfather or by the house.

A Swedish rendering needs to separate the journey from the inserted description instead of postponing every verb until the source’s final position. The person travelling, the house reached and the place where that house stands remain separate relationships. Reordering should make those relationships readable rather than preserve the Persian sequence of words mechanically.

Isof’s advice examines an inserted conditional clause inside an att clause and explains why the following order can resemble a main clause. This is a particularly useful caution for long translations: identifying an att early in the sentence is not enough to determine every later word-order choice without considering an intervening clause.

An embedded statement can have its own order and emphasis

An Isof research article illustrates Hon berättade att hon tänkte inte läsa den boken, discussing main-clause order inside an embedded assertion. The article contrasts this with ordinary modern subordinate ordering. These documented options mean that an unusual-looking sequence should be evaluated in its context rather than condemned solely because it follows att.

The Persian lesson likewise notes colloquial movement of the verb closer to the subject. Source word order can therefore reflect register as well as the arrangement of information. A formal written explanation and a casual report need not have identical structures even before Swedish is involved.

For Persian into Swedish, locate the finite predicate and participant in each clause, distinguish a fronted time phrase from an inserted description, and preserve which clause reports the event. That analysis allows natural target ordering without making the destination act, assigning the trip to an explanatory relative clause, or losing the source’s intended emphasis.
