Persian to Odia: a respectful third-person reference can stay singular

Persian išān does not always refer to several people

The Texas Persian pronoun lesson explains that colloquial išān can serve as a polite or formal reference to one third person, while written usage can also represent they. An Odia translation must therefore identify whether the source means one respected person or an actual group before deciding how many people the account describes.

This matters in a message about a visiting teacher. Respectful reference to one teacher should not become an announcement that several visitors are coming. Conversely, a written Persian statement about a delegation must not be reduced to one individual merely because the same form can have a respectful singular use.

Odia can express respect through the verb with se

Kalyanamalini Sahoo’s study contrasts se ās-u-chh-i with se ās-u-chh-anti, both describing a third person coming. In the second example, plural agreement expresses an honorific singular interpretation as well as being associated with plural reference elsewhere. The referent need not multiply when the respectful verbal form appears.

This offers a precise comparison with Persian išān: both languages can use plurality-related resources for deference, but the information need not occur in the same word. A Persian respectful pronoun and an Odia respectful verb can contribute corresponding social meaning through different grammatical locations.

For the teacher example, first retain the established singular visitor. Then let the Odia construction express appropriate respect without adding extra people. Counting visitors from the target verb’s surface agreement alone would repeat the same mistake as treating every Persian išān as an ordinary plural pronoun.

Respect for someone discussed differs from addressing the listener

Sahoo distinguishes third-person respect from the second-person pronoun choices tu, tume and āpaNa. A message can address a colleague at one level of familiarity while respectfully discussing someone else. The person receiving the message and the person whose arrival is reported are different participants, even when courtesy matters for both. A familiar exchange between two friends can still report a respected teacher’s arrival; familiar address between those friends does not remove respect for the teacher.

The Persian source likewise can mention išān while addressing the listener with another pronoun or no overt pronoun. Translating the third-person respectful reference into an Odia second-person address form would change who the sentence is about. Preserve the visitor as the reported subject rather than accidentally instructing the recipient to come.

For this direction, resolve the referent and grammatical person before matching politeness. Determine whether išān denotes one person or several in this particular source, and whether the sentence reports that person’s action or speaks directly to the listener. Odia can then preserve both the intended participant count and the appropriate respect, without assuming that every plural-looking element signals a group or that all courtesy belongs to the addressee.
