Persian to Central Kurdish: similar linking constructions do not take identical definiteness marking

A Persian descriptive link does not determine the Sorani noun state

Persian film-e xub names a good film in the Texas ezāfe lesson. The adjective follows the noun through a connecting vowel. Central Kurdish, or Sorani, also links nouns and following adjectives, but the similarity does not mean that the Persian connector can be replaced with one invariant Kurdish vowel regardless of reference.

Thackston’s Sorani grammar illustrates hotelèk i bâsh, a good hotel. The noun has indefinite marking and is followed by an adjectival link. The phrase introduces a hotel rather than necessarily identifying one already established. A Persian hotel recommendation must be interpreted for that reference before selecting the target noun state.

A definite description can package the adjective differently

The grammar contrasts an open adjectival link with a close construction illustrated by hotel a bâshaká, the good hotel. In this construction the linking vowel and the placement of definite marking differ from the indefinite example. Retaining the same hotel and the same positive description does not require keeping every grammatical element in the same form.

This matters if a Persian exchange first recommends a good hotel and later identifies the good hotel among alternatives. The first mention can introduce an option; the second can select an established one. The Sorani rendering needs to preserve that change in reference instead of treating the adjective and noun as a fixed phrase copied unchanged throughout.

Thackston also discusses open constructions with definite heads, so the contrast is not a universal ban on one structure with definiteness. The target choice relates to how tightly the descriptive property identifies the intended category. Translating the Persian phrase therefore involves more than adding a definite ending wherever an English gloss happens to contain the.

The writing systems do not make the links interchangeable

The Texas lesson explains that Persian ezāfe after a consonant is often pronounced without being written. Thackston describes the Sorani open linking vowel as written with ی. Similarity in the broader linking function does not allow the Persian omission convention to be transferred automatically into Kurdish spelling.

A short Persian listing can thus contain a meaningful noun–adjective relationship without an independent visible connector. Its Sorani translation may make that connection more visible while also expressing indefiniteness or definiteness through target morphology. The extra written material does not necessarily add a new item or an owner; it can organize the original description.

For this direction, recover the described item and decide whether the property merely characterizes it or helps select a particular option. Then express the relationship using the appropriate Sorani noun state and adjective construction. Treat the shared linking tradition as a useful comparison, while preserving the grammatical differences that decide which hotel or other object the message actually identifies.
