Persian to Kannada: writing a note for yourself or for someone else

A personal note need not involve a purchase

A Persian request to write down an address can produce a confusing Kannada result if each part of a compound verb is interpreted independently. The intended action may simply be recording information for later use. It need not involve buying stationery, paying for a copy or giving the paper to another person.

Zydenbos’s Kannada manual distinguishes the independent verb koḷḷu, associated with buying, from its auxiliary use after another verb’s gerund. In the latter construction, the action can benefit the person performing it. The lesson’s writing example shows someone making a note for their own use. Reading only the auxiliary’s standalone dictionary meaning would misidentify the task.

The same lesson contrasts this with auxiliary koḍu, where the action benefits somebody else. Its writing examples distinguish recording something for oneself from writing it for another person. These are documented constructions, not permission to attach either auxiliary mechanically to every Persian verb containing a reference to a person.

Identify the writer, the user and the owner separately

Imagine a Persian-speaking visitor asking a Kannada-speaking workshop organiser to record the room number. Three arrangements are possible: the organiser writes a reminder for personal use, writes a note that the visitor will use, or asks the visitor to make their own note. All involve writing, but they assign the benefit and responsibility differently.

An instruction that stresses doing something personally introduces a further distinction. Performing the action oneself does not necessarily mean doing it for one’s own benefit. Someone can personally prepare another person’s copy. Keep that contrast clear before deciding whether a reflexive expression, a benefactive construction or an ordinary verb best represents the Persian message.

The University of Texas Persian lesson describes xod with personal suffixes in reflexive constructions. It also distinguishes these forms from ordinary objective endings. Consequently, a suffix identifying a participant should not automatically be expanded into an assertion that the action is self-directed. Work out the relationship in the sentence rather than treating every personal ending as equivalent to self.

Use the surrounding exchange to resolve a short instruction

Look at what prompted the request. A visitor who cannot remember a room number is asking for a usable reminder; an organiser updating a private attendance sheet is performing a different task. Preserve that purpose when translating, while avoiding invented details about whose notebook is used or whether a printed copy is available.

If the Persian message is genuinely ambiguous, ask who needs the written information. That question is more productive than asking whether a single Kannada word means buy or take. In a compound expression, the complete construction establishes the action. A word-by-word reverse translation can therefore create a purchase that nobody requested.

For reusable workshop messages, save complete, checked instructions with their context. Label a personal reminder differently from a note prepared for a visitor. Before sharing the Kannada wording widely, have a proficient reader confirm the intended beneficiary and level of address. The useful distinction is who will use the result, not merely who holds the pen.
