Persian to Italian: descriptions and owners need different noun-phrase decisions

Persian ezafe links several kinds of relationship

The University of Texas Persian grammar illustrates ketāb-e man, my book, and film-e xub, the good movie. Both use the ezafe link after the noun, but one identifies an owner while the other supplies a description. The shared connector does not make possession and quality the same relationship. Before constructing the Italian phrase, establish what the following Persian expression contributes.

The grammar also uses ezafe in naming expressions, including places and their names. A source chain therefore cannot be translated by inserting an Italian equivalent of of between every pair of words. Identify the head noun and determine whether each dependent identifies a person, describes a quality or names the entity. That interpretation matters before any decision about Italian adjective order. After consonants, Persian often leaves the ezafe vowel unwritten, so visible spacing alone may not reveal the connection. Preserve the relationship established by the phrase rather than treating each written word as an independent label.

Italian adjective position can change the meaning

The Accademia della Crusca contrasts amico vecchio, an elderly friend, with vecchio amico, a longstanding friend who need not be elderly. This is a useful warning when translating a Persian description involving age or familiarity. Matching the adjective’s dictionary meaning while ignoring its Italian position can change whether the message describes a person’s age or the history of the friendship.

The same guidance contrasts an unused new car with another car acquired as a replacement or addition through the position of nuovo. Decide what the Persian source means by new in the particular account, rather than placing the Italian adjective after the noun solely because Persian normally places this description there. The academy also notes that adjectives with a dependent complement require postnominal placement in the illustrated construction. These are semantic and grammatical choices, not stylistic decorations that can always be swapped without consequence. Keep the intended description stable while allowing Italian to organize it appropriately.

A possessive ending agrees with the possession, not the owner’s gender

Ramaglia’s Treccani account explains that Italian possessives normally agree in gender and number with the noun they accompany or replace. Their base identifies the possessor’s person and number; the third-person base does not distinguish a male owner from a female owner. Thus the contrast between suo and sua is not a translation of his versus her. It reflects the possessed noun’s grammatical properties.

For Persian-to-Italian translation, identify the owner independently from the object being described. A feminine Italian possessive does not establish that a woman owns the item, and a plural possessive ending does not automatically mean that several owners are involved. The account also identifies invariant loro as an exception to ordinary inflection. Keep the relevant noun available even when the Italian phrase omits it and uses a possessive alone. Its understood gender and number still matter. This prevents an owner’s identity from being guessed from target agreement that actually concerns the possession.
