Persian to Hungarian: respectful you changes more than the pronoun
One respected addressee can have plural-looking Persian reference
Persian šomā can address one person respectfully as well as several people. A Hungarian translation must preserve the actual addressee and the intended relationship, rather than carry a grammatical plural across automatically. The choice affects the target verb as well as the word used for you. A courteous message to one recipient is not necessarily an instruction to a group.
Persian Online also notes respectful colloquial use of išān for a third-person singular referent, while written usage can have plural reference. That makes a short pronoun insufficient to determine whether the writer addresses someone, speaks about one respected person or refers to several people. Read the conversational role before assigning the Hungarian person and number.
Hungarian ön addresses somebody but agrees like third person
Bárány’s primary study discusses ön, a polite Hungarian form used for the addressee in formal contexts. Although its meaning points to the listener, it behaves syntactically like third person in both subject and object agreement. Thus a Persian respectful second-person expression does not require second-person Hungarian agreement merely because both messages are addressed directly to the same recipient.
The study illustrates Látom önt inside a sentence about seeing the addressee in a newspaper. This contrasts with its informal second-person-object pattern Látlak. Changing the target address form can therefore change which verbal pattern is appropriate. The distinction is grammatical as well as social; replacing the pronoun while leaving a previously selected familiar verb ending untouched can create an inconsistent message.
A direct object is different from the person receiving an item
Hungarian Universal Dependencies documents special verb marking with second-person direct objects and distinguishes definite from indefinite object agreement. A listener referred to somewhere in the sentence is not automatically that direct object. In a message about seeing the listener, the addressed person is directly affected by seeing; in a message about sending them a document, the document and its recipient have different roles.
The target agreement decision must consequently follow both the selected address form and the participant’s grammatical role. An overly simple rule such as use the special you ending whenever the message contains you would ignore the direct-object restriction. The person may instead be the actor, recipient, companion or owner of something mentioned in the clause.
Persian pronouns themselves do not change for every role
The Persian pronoun lesson contrasts man as the actor in I went with man as the affected person in he saw me. Its written form stays the same across those uses. This helps explain why Persian-to-Hungarian translation needs a role analysis before choosing a pronoun case or a verb pattern; familiar source spelling alone does not settle the target construction.
For a courteous Hungarian message, establish whether the source addresses one person or more, whether it uses respectful treatment and what role the recipient has in the event. Then keep the chosen target treatment consistent through the pronoun and predicate. The same real-world listener can require a different Hungarian grammatical pattern when addressed formally, without becoming a third person in the conversation or turning into several addressees.
