Persian to English: recover the links before choosing the words
Find information that Persian leaves inside its grammar
Persian can leave a subject pronoun unstated because a verb ending identifies the person. رفتم means “I went”; a natural English sentence usually needs the written subject “I.” When converting a short Persian message, first work out the verb’s person and tense. Otherwise an English rendering may look like an instruction or a fragment instead of the statement the writer intended.
Where the source does use او, it can mean “he” or “she.” The pronoun alone does not settle the question. Use an established referent from the conversation, repeat a name where appropriate, or use a suitable neutral English construction. A translation should not manufacture a male or female identity just to fill an English pronoun slot.
Unpack ezafe instead of copying a string of nouns
Persian connects nouns to owners and modifiers through ezafe, often without writing the connecting vowel. کتاب من is “my book,” not “book I.” The same pronoun من can participate in different constructions, whereas English distinguishes “I,” “me,” and “my.” Choose the English form according to its role in the finished sentence.
A phrase such as دانشگاه تهران means “the University of Tehran.” English may express a Persian linking relationship with “of,” a possessive, an adjective, or a recognised proper name. There is no single English word that should replace every ezafe. Identify the relationship first, especially in a long institutional title where several nouns follow one another.
Do not mistake conversational spelling for a different subject
An informal Iranian Persian message can write خونه where standard writing has خانه, both referring to a house or home. Recognising this variation avoids treating an everyday text as a collection of unfamiliar words. The English can remain ordinary and readable without imitating the source’s spelling informality through exaggerated slang.
Respect deserves a separate decision. شما may address one person politely or several people. English “you” can cover either, but surrounding references to a group must still make sense. Do not assume a respectful plural-looking form proves that several recipients are present. Equally, a group instruction should not quietly become a personal message because English uses the same pronoun.
Make omitted assumptions visible only when needed
When translating a practical message, check which date system the writer is using before converting a date into English. Changing script does not automatically change calendars. If the original states a date without establishing its calendar, that uncertainty should be resolved from the actual booking, document, or conversation rather than guessed from the language.
Read the final English as an independent message. It should contain the subjects, articles, and connecting words that English requires, while retaining the original level of certainty. Check personal names against an existing English spelling where available. A new transliteration can be readable yet fail to match the recipient’s passport, invoice, or searchable customer record.
