Persian to Dari: familiar grammar does not make every everyday word interchangeable

A notebook can become an office if its familiar label is carried across

Indiana University’s Persian overview contrasts Iranian daftar for a notebook with Dari kitābča, and identifies an office sense for daftar in Dari. This is a useful warning for Persian into Dari: a recognizable word inside an otherwise familiar sentence can point the reader toward a different object or institution.

In a message about buying something for class, the intended notebook should remain a portable writing item. In a message about going to work, an office belongs to a different activity. The surrounding verbs and setting help distinguish those readings; selecting a target word only because it resembles the source can preserve the spelling while losing the request.

The university also gives čawkí for a Dari chair. A furnishing list therefore needs lexical adaptation even when quantities and grammatical relationships require little reorganization. These documented contrasts are examples of local preferences and senses, not proof that speakers never encounter alternatives across communities.

A progressive construction should not be rejected merely for sounding Iranian

The same university overview describes a broad difference in how continuous events are expressed. Adam Baker’s learner grammar supplies an important regional qualification: it documents a Herati expression with an inflected have verb followed by the main verb, noting that this construction is more common in Iran.

Baker’s example ma dʌrʊm mexoram describes eating at the current moment. It would therefore be inaccurate to make an absolute rule that every Dari speaker avoids have-based progressives. For a Persian source describing what somebody is doing now, preserve the ongoing event and consider the intended regional usage before treating a familiar construction as necessarily wrong.

A message reporting a current meal differs from one describing a habitual meal. Regional adaptation should not erase that difference merely to remove a construction associated with Iran. Conversely, retaining familiar Iranian wording is not sufficient evidence that it is the best choice for every Afghan audience.

Shared phrase structure can preserve relationships while vocabulary changes

The Persian ezāfe lesson illustrates ketāb-e man for my book and film-e xub for a good film. Those links identify a possessor and a description respectively. Replacing a local object word does not authorize changing either relationship: the notebook can remain mine, and a description can remain attached to the same item.

Baker emphasizes variation within Afghanistan, including regional and formal versus informal usage. For this translation direction, that means specifying the intended setting can resolve an actual lexical or construction choice. A classroom supply request, an office instruction and a conversational account of eating do not require identical decisions simply because their source grammar is familiar.

Persian into Dari is often adaptation within a closely related linguistic space. Its practical difficulty is precisely that much remains recognizable. Keep the intended object, event timing and noun relationships intact while choosing terms and constructions appropriate to the target audience.
