Persian to Bodo: distinguish somebody’s notebook from a notebook intended for them

A person beside a noun can have different relationships to it

A Persian note about a notebook may identify its owner, its intended recipient, or the person asked to collect it. Those relationships should remain distinct in Bodo. Knowing that a particular person is associated with the notebook does not establish that every mention concerns ownership.

The University of Texas Persian materials explain ezāfe as a connector used for possession, adjectival modification, and naming. Their ownership examples include ketāb-e man, my book, and daftar-e ostād, the professor’s notebook. The noun precedes its modifier, and after a consonant the connecting vowel is normally pronounced without being written.

Narzary’s Bodo study distinguishes subject, direct-object, indirect-object, and possessive forms of pronouns. Its possessive section describes ni following a personal pronoun. This gives a documented target distinction between referring to a person as an object or recipient and identifying that person through possession; it does not justify replacing every Persian connector with one Bodo suffix.

A lost-property desk needs the owner, not just an associated name

Imagine a Persian-speaking visitor leaving a notebook at a conference desk and asking a Bodo-speaking organiser to help recover it. A message might identify the professor’s notebook but ask a student to collect it. This original lost-property scenario involves an owner and a collector who need not be the same person.

If the source instead describes a notebook prepared for the professor, it may still belong to the conference organisers until it is handed over. Intended receipt is different from established ownership. Do not turn a planned gift or allocated supply into a statement that the professor has already taken possession of it.

Likewise, a notebook containing the professor’s name might be a labelled gift, an attendance notebook, or a personally owned object. A name written on the cover helps identify the item but does not resolve every relationship by itself. Preserve the explanation actually given in the Persian exchange rather than choosing the most convenient story.

A short pronoun must retain its grammatical job

After the owner is introduced, a later sentence may refer to that person with a pronoun. Check whether this sentence identifies their notebook, asks somebody to contact them, or requests delivery to them. Narzary’s case-function table is relevant precisely because the person can remain the same while the grammatical role changes.

The Persian ezāfe connector also does more than mark ownership. A descriptive word following a notebook noun should not automatically be interpreted as another owner’s name. Retain surrounding context, especially when punctuation is sparse or the phrase has been copied from a longer message. A missing written connecting vowel alone does not establish that the words are unrelated.

Read the translation as the desk volunteer would: which notebook is being sought, who owns it if that is known, and who may collect or receive it? These distinctions let the volunteer act on the message without assigning ownership from a delivery request or assuming that the person mentioned most recently must be the owner.
