Norwegian Bokmål to Finnish: replace articles with meaning, not empty endings

A definite Norwegian noun does not dictate one Finnish object form

Bokmål can mark a noun as definite through a suffix. Finnish does not have a corresponding article system, and its object endings serve other grammatical purposes. Do not read the final form of boka as an instruction to choose one Finnish case regardless of the action. Establish whether the writer describes an activity in progress, a completed whole, a negative statement, or a verb with its own object requirements.

“Jeg leser boka” can be “Luen kirjaa” when the point is reading in progress. If the message promises to read the whole book through, the intended Finnish construction can change. Norwegian present does not by itself resolve that viewpoint. Keep any words about finishing, deadlines, or partial work attached to the action when deciding on the Finnish object.

The Norwegian gender contrast disappears in hän

Norwegian han and hun can identify different people through gendered pronouns. Finnish hän does not encode that distinction. “Hun kommer i morgen” becomes “Hän tulee huomenna.” If a paragraph alternates between a man and a woman using only pronouns, Finnish may need their names to preserve who does what.

This is a reference problem rather than a reason to add gender descriptions to every Finnish sentence. Repeat a name at the point of ambiguity, then let the later sentence use an ordinary pronoun. If the Norwegian source uses gender-neutral hen, Finnish hän can also preserve that neutrality without implying a different person.

Possession requires a different sentence frame

“Jeg har en billett” becomes “Minulla on lippu.” Finnish expresses the possessor through minulla and uses on with the possessed item. It does not reproduce a direct subject–har–object frame. Translate the relationship before selecting the individual word forms.

Norwegian possessives can appear after a definite noun or before an indefinite noun, but that ordering contrast does not transfer automatically. Identify the actual owner and how the item is being introduced. Finnish can express possession through its own pronouns and suffixes, and a clear name may be preferable where several people own similar belongings.

Let Finnish carry movement and address in its own forms

Norwegian prepositions frequently correspond to Finnish case endings. A journey to a city must remain different from being in it or coming from it. Translate the full place expression as one unit, particularly in collection and delivery instructions. A copied Norwegian preposition followed by an uninflected Finnish noun is not a reliable location phrase.

For address, Norwegian singular du and plural dere need different Finnish choices. Te can also be polite singular, with agreement conventions that differ from ordinary plural address. Do not make every unfamiliar recipient plural or formal automatically. Use the established relationship, and choose standard written Finnish for an ordinary clear business email unless the source deliberately requires a conversational voice.
