Nepali to Sinhala: carry respect into the appropriate register
Do not equate a Nepali honorific with one Sinhala pronoun
Nepali expresses levels of respect through pronouns and associated verb forms. Sinhala also uses socially meaningful forms of address, but its choices do not map neatly onto the Nepali levels. Identify the relationship between writer and reader rather than substituting a single Sinhala word every time तपाईं appears.
A message to an unfamiliar colleague needs a different voice from an intimate family exchange. Preserve that relationship while constructing a coherent Sinhala sentence. Adding a courtesy word cannot always repair an unsuitable form of address. If the source is very short, an established name or role can help determine whom the writer is addressing and how the message should sound.
Choose whether the Sinhala is conversational or literary
Nepali public writing and personal messages do not correspond automatically to Sinhala’s literary and spoken varieties. Sinhala differences include grammatical forms as well as vocabulary. A conversational source may reasonably become everyday Sinhala, while a public explanation needs a consistent written voice.
The distinction affects reference to people. Sinhala formal written ඔහු and ඇය distinguish “he” and “she,” whereas conversational එයා can refer to either. The Nepali source’s pronoun may not alone establish the gender needed for a formal target choice. Use the actual referent from the conversation rather than guessing from an occupation or a name’s appearance.
Translate the ordinary word instead of the source sound
Nepali पानी and Sinhala වතුර can both mean “water.” A Sinhala transcription of the Nepali pronunciation would not automatically give the everyday target word. Translate common vocabulary for its meaning, while treating names and quoted titles as separate spelling decisions.
Similarly, Nepali घर refers to a house or home; a natural Sinhala choice depends on the particular sentence, such as whether it describes a building or going home. Do not assume every dictionary equivalent can be used in every construction. Resolve the intended place and action before selecting a target phrase.
Different scripts need independent proofreading
Nepali uses Devanagari, while Sinhala uses a distinct script with its own vowel signs and consonant combinations. There is no dependable visual character substitution that produces an accurate translation. Keep all target marks intact when copying, and inspect the result in the application where it will be read.
For a delivery or travel message, preserve names, quantities, dates, and identifiers independently of the prose. A date should not be silently converted between calendars merely because the language changes. Check an established Sinhala spelling for a place or person where available, and keep booking codes exact. The translated message should let the reader locate the same event or record even when its grammar and script have changed completely.
