Mongolian Cyrillic to English: read the noun ending before moving the verb

A book before the verb is still the object

Mongolian commonly places the verb after its object. “Би ном уншдаг” can be “I read books,” describing a habit. The English verb belongs before books, but the source’s participant roles must remain intact. Do not interpret the first noun after I as another subject simply because it precedes the action word.

Compare a habitual reading statement with an activity happening now. Mongolian verbal endings and auxiliary constructions can distinguish those viewpoints, while English may use read versus am reading. A report about a regular study routine should not automatically become a description of what the writer is doing at this moment. Keep a time expression attached to the action it qualifies.

A noun’s case can identify the specific affected item

Mongolian distinguishes an explicitly case-marked object from an unmarked object in relevant constructions. An identifiable item can receive accusative marking; a bare noun can have a different referential interpretation. English often expresses that contrast through articles and context rather than a matching noun suffix.

For a sentence about reading this book or sending the document, identify the complete noun phrase before selecting the English article. Do not translate a suffix as a separate of or to merely because another case form has that gloss. The actual verb and phrase determine whether the item is an object, owner, destination, or source.

У and ү are not decorative variants

Cyrillic Mongolian “ус” means water, whereas “үс” means hair. These letters look similar to an unfamiliar reader but distinguish ordinary words. A copied name or item with ү replaced by у may therefore be a different spelling, not a harmless keyboard simplification. Ө likewise belongs to Mongolian’s own alphabet rather than being an optional accent on о.

This matters when matching a source to a dictionary or checking a short shopping message. Do not infer Russian vocabulary merely because the text uses Cyrillic. The language’s Mongolian letters, grammar, and meaning must be read together. An accurate English translation starts from the actual source spelling.

Gender is not encoded like English he and she

Mongolian does not have ordinary noun gender agreement comparable to many European languages. A third-person reference need not identify the English he/she distinction. Recover the person from the exchange or use a name or singular they where appropriate instead of guessing from an occupation.

This also prevents an English translation from adding identity information just to make a paragraph seem smoother. If several people share a neutral source reference, repeat a name at the ambiguous point. Keep the English clause clear while preserving the source’s habitual or current-action meaning and the noun relationships carried by Mongolian endings.
