Maltese to English: do not let a familiar word hide its grammar
Attached forms become separate English relationships
Maltese articles and some prepositions are joined to neighboring material by hyphens or apostrophes. The article il- and its assimilated forms can therefore appear as part of a larger written unit. English often expresses the same function with separate words. A longer English phrase is not automatically an explanatory addition.
Forms such as f’ and b’ are shortened prepositions in the grammatical description. Read the whole attached phrase before deciding its English relation. An English reader needs to know whether something is in a place, with an instrument, or connected through another relationship; preserving the source punctuation without interpreting it will not communicate that information.
Do not count negative-looking pieces
Maltese commonly builds verbal negation with ma and a final -x. In English that construction usually needs one ordinary negative, rather than a separate not for each visible piece. Yet the absence of one part is not proof that the sentence is positive: the syntax literature documents other patterns and restrictions.
The notice Tarmi xejn hawn is a prohibition against throwing anything here. An English rendering that describes someone throwing nothing would miss its instructional force. Read whether the source is a command before choosing English mood. For a public sign, that distinction determines whether the reader understands a rule or merely a description.
Ma is not always the same grammatical item
The published syntax discussion distinguishes comparative ma from the negative expression with the same spelling. In a correlative construction with iktar, more, it can help express the more...the more relationship. An automatic search-and-replace of every ma with English not would therefore reverse or break the meaning.
Check the whole comparison when quantities or degrees change together. More spending associated with more output is different from a negative claim about either one. When the English draft seems internally contradictory, return to the source clause pattern before assuming that the Maltese author made a logical error. A short, frequent word can serve a construction rather than carry its usual standalone gloss.
Identify whether the event is underway
The progressive particle qed and future markers such as se help distinguish the event’s temporal framing. English normally needs that distinction in its verb phrase. In a work update, is repairing and will repair describe different commitments even when the same person and object appear in both sentences.
Finally, read any negative together with these markers. The research discusses mhux in progressive and future expressions, showing why isolating a negator from the rest of its predicate can mislead. For an English summary, preserve whether an event is happening, planned, or ruled out. These are stronger checks than accepting a translation merely because several borrowed-looking words seem recognizable.
