Klingon pIqaD to English: identify the written content before interpreting it

A familiar prop is not a guaranteed sentence

The KLI’s writing guide explains that some earlier on-screen uses of the Klingon character set were chosen for appearance rather than meaningful language. It also distinguishes those from later uses that do write actual Klingon. Before translating an image, establish whether its glyph sequence is intended to encode a linguistic message at all.

If the source is copied text rather than an image, preserve that text before trying display changes. A font problem and an unfamiliar Klingon word are different difficulties. Replacing unrecognized signs with guesses can destroy the evidence needed to recover the Latin reading and the eventual English meaning.

Transliteration provides a bridge, not the English answer

The KLI describes the mapping of Klingon sounds to its pIqaD character set. Recovering the corresponding Latin notation can make the language easier to analyze, but that notation still represents Klingon. It is not an English translation. A reader must then interpret its words, prefixes, and sentence structure.

For example, jI- and bI- are Latin analytical examples of prefixes marking I and singular you respectively when there is no object. Their function can determine an English subject even where no separate source pronoun is visible. Do not select I or you merely from the position or prominence of a glyph in an artwork.

English may need to state time explicitly

Klingon lacks English-style verb tense, so the surrounding passage and any timestamp determine whether an English event is past, present, or future. A short pIqaD inscription may not supply that information. Transliteration cannot recover a timeframe that the language leaves to context.

If the source appears within a longer panel or a sequence of captions, inspect the surrounding text before choosing the English tense. An English reader may find one tense more natural, but that preference is not evidence that the source uniquely supports it. Keep any uncertainty in a working note when the inscription is isolated.

Duj tIn, quoted here in Latin notation, is the KLI’s example of a big ship. An English phrase describing a noun has a different function from a sentence asserting that it is big. When interpreting a pIqaD caption, identify that function rather than turning every short group of words into a complete statement.

Finally, compare the English interpretation with the recovered Latin form for actor, object, time, and descriptive attachment. Keep the original glyph sequence with that analysis so another reader can verify the mapping. A convincing English paraphrase is not sufficient if it rests on an unverified transcription; the chain from source signs through Klingon grammar to English meaning should remain inspectable.
