Hindi to Urdu: preserve the voice while changing the writing

Shared speech does not make every written word interchangeable

Hindi and Urdu share much everyday grammar and vocabulary. That makes a familiar spoken sentence comparatively straightforward, but a written notice can contain formal vocabulary that is less familiar across the two standards. Start by asking what the Hindi sentence actually communicates. A transformation that only substitutes Urdu letters may leave a specialised Hindi term unexplained for the intended Urdu reader.

For an ordinary expression, much can remain recognisable: पानी becomes پانی, both meaning “water.” This is a case where a familiar shared word can be carried into the other script without replacing it with something grander. A successful Urdu message does not need to sound more literary than the Hindi original. Preserve the level of everyday speech when that is what the writer used.

Choose the Urdu expression, not a letter-by-letter substitute

धन्यवाद and شکریہ can both serve the everyday purpose of “thank you.” Converting the sounds of धन्यवाद into Urdu letters is possible as transliteration, but choosing شکریہ is often the more recognisable wording for an ordinary Urdu thank-you message. That distinction matters: transliteration preserves a pronunciation, while translation selects an expression that performs the intended function.

The same decision applies to public-service and administrative wording. Do not replace every Sanskrit-derived word mechanically, and do not assume every Persian-derived word is difficult. Some are common in both languages. Judge a term by whether the target reader will understand it in the sentence. Where a document names an official institution or programme, retain its official identity even if a short explanatory equivalent is also useful.

Keep the relationship between the speakers

आप कहाँ हैं? becomes آپ کہاں ہیں؟, “Where are you?” in respectful address. The relationship conveyed by आप remains present in آپ, and the respectful verb form remains consistent. Moving from Hindi to Urdu does not justify changing a polite question into an intimate one. Likewise, a deliberately familiar exchange should not automatically become a formal letter.

Notice that this example changes both writing direction and punctuation appearance while keeping its basic sentence structure. Hindi and Urdu being closely related does not mean every visible mark has a one-to-one equivalent. Read the Urdu output as a complete sentence rather than evaluating it solely against the number or position of Hindi characters.

Names need spelling decisions of their own

Devanagari and Urdu do not map neatly character by character. Urdu spelling can preserve distinctions in borrowed vocabulary that are not obvious from the Hindi pronunciation, while ordinary Urdu writing often leaves short vowels unmarked. A plausible-looking spelling is therefore not proof that a name or technical term has been rendered conventionally.

For a person’s name, use a known Urdu spelling when one exists. Keep account numbers and reference strings unchanged. Read a mixed Urdu-and-English result in the application where it will be sent, because right-to-left text can make adjacent punctuation look unfamiliar. These checks preserve identity and readability without rewriting the source into a different cultural or religious voice.
