Gujarati to English: distinguish ownership from agreement

Several Gujarati forms can all mean English “my”

Gujarati possessives change with the gender and number of the thing possessed. મારું ઘર is “my house”; મારી ગાડી is “my car.” English uses the same possessive word in both phrases. Do not interpret the Gujarati ending as evidence that the house has a different owner or that the speaker’s gender has changed.

This distinction becomes important in a message listing several belongings. A change in the possessive ending may be entirely grammatical, while the owner remains the same. Trace the reference through the sentence before introducing another person in English. The English should identify who owns which item without turning agreement patterns into new facts.

Recover who belongs in the group

અમે excludes the listener from “we”; આપણે includes the listener. Both often become English “we,” but the underlying group matters in a plan, invitation, or work instruction. A sentence about what a family will do should not accidentally invite the recipient if the Gujarati excludes them.

Where English alone leaves the group unclear, use an established description such as the team or the named participants. Do not add a new group merely to explain the grammar. The translation should preserve the actual participation conveyed by the Gujarati rather than supplying a long definition of every pronoun. This is particularly useful when a message is forwarded to someone who was not part of the original conversation.

A completed action can alter the subject form

Gujarati can use an agentive form with completed transitive actions. The visible shape of a first-person expression may therefore change even though the same speaker is reporting the event. Identify the actor and the action together rather than treating every unfamiliar pronoun form as a new participant.

English generally needs an ordinary subject and a suitable tense. Do not reproduce the Gujarati case marking as an extra English preposition. Instead, determine who performed the completed action and what it affected. This helps prevent a report about sending a document from becoming an English sentence that assigns the sending to the recipient.

Pronouns do not always settle gender or number

તે can refer to “he,” “she,” or “it” depending on context. Look for a name, an earlier noun, or an established identity before choosing a gendered English pronoun. A guess based only on occupation or a name’s appearance may create information that the original did not establish.

તમે can address one person respectfully or several people. English “you” covers both, but surrounding words such as “both” or “everyone” should appear only when the source supports them. Preserve courtesy through the request and overall voice rather than adding a title to every line. Finally, compare names and reference numbers with the source record: a fluent English paragraph still fails its practical purpose if the reader cannot identify the correct person, account, or booking.
