Greek to Yoruba: forty-five can be expressed through subtraction rather than forty plus five

Preserve the value, not the order of number parts

Greek σαράντα πέντε, forty-five, names forty followed by five. The Yoruba number forms taught in Yorùbá Yé Mi do not simply reproduce that tens-plus-units sequence throughout the range. Some numbers are expressed through addition to a base, while others are formed by subtracting from a higher value.

The University of Texas chapter lists ogójì for forty and gives separate forms for forty-one through fifty. In its sequence, forty-five through forty-nine are represented through a descending distance from fifty. The number’s spoken components must therefore be interpreted as a whole before assigning a Greek-style arithmetic reading.

A subtractive form does not request a discount

Imagine translating a Greek price of σαράντα πέντε into a Yoruba number expression built on five less than fifty. The subtraction belongs to the formation of the number forty-five. It is not an instruction for the customer to pay fifty and then ask the seller to remove five.

The reverse misunderstanding is also possible during checking. A reader who recognizes a component related to fifty should not conclude that the translation changed a forty-five price to fifty. The full expression’s numerical value matters. Retaining the digits 45 beside a written-out amount can make the equivalence visible in an instructional example.

A Greek count of σαράντα δύο, forty-two, belongs to another part of the chapter’s sequence. The listed form builds upward from forty instead of using the same subtractive distance from fifty as forty-eight. Consequently, one spelling rule inferred from a single price cannot generate the entire target range safely.

Number words are not a transcript of written digits

The source numerals 45 and 48 share the initial digit four, but their Yoruba forms need not begin with an identical spoken part corresponding to Greek σαράντα. Written decimal notation groups numbers one way; the lexical numeral system can organize them through different reference values. A shared digit is not a reason to force a shared target word prefix.

This distinction also matters for quantities rather than money. A Greek order of forty-eight notebooks concerns exactly forty-eight items. A target expression formed relative to fifty must not be interpreted as fifty notebooks with two defective copies, unless the source separately says so. Number formation and the condition of purchased goods are different pieces of information.

The textbook reinforces numerical interpretation through addition and subtraction exercises and asks learners to give answers in words. That exercise format is useful here because it separates calculating the value from choosing the conventional expression. Translation likewise needs a correct amount before it needs a plausible-looking sequence of target number parts.

The cited chapter presents a particular traditional counting sequence. It does not establish that every Yoruba speaker uses one pronunciation or one numeral style in every modern transaction. For Greek amounts in this range, the reliable comparison is the complete source value against the complete target value, rather than whether their tens and units appear in matching order.
