Greek to Upper Sorbian: a present-looking auxiliary can belong to a past report

Read the whole verb complex before assigning the time

A Greek account can describe writing through a simple past form or a compound construction. Upper Sorbian can use a form of be together with an l-participle to report a past event. A translator should therefore not read the target auxiliary in isolation and conclude that the event has moved into the present.

The Greek overview describes έχω as an auxiliary in perfect constructions and distinguishes finite tense and aspect. Original short examples such as γράφει, έγραψε, and έχει γράψει show that the writing event can be packaged differently. Recognizing the dictionary meaning of one auxiliary is not enough to identify the whole construction’s time or viewpoint.

Stone’s Upper Sorbian example wón je pisał means he wrote. The form je belongs to the verb be, but the entire phrase contains the l-participle and expresses the past report. Translating je alone as a free-standing present is would lose the function of the following participle and misread the completed message.

Writing, being written, and having written are different constructions

This matters in a Greek update saying that someone wrote a letter yesterday. An Upper Sorbian compound with je does not contradict yesterday merely because its auxiliary resembles a present form. The event’s time comes from the whole predicate and its context. Removing the auxiliary to make the target look more like a Greek simple past would not be a sound correction.

The participle’s identity is important too. Stone separately describes passive participles and gives wona je wuzamknjena for she is excluded. The shared auxiliary je therefore does not make this the same construction as wón je pisał. A translator must identify what follows the auxiliary rather than classify every be-plus-form sequence as one tense or voice.

Compare two original intentions: she wrote the notice yesterday, and the notice is displayed now. They concern different subjects, events, and time relationships. A target participial expression should preserve those distinctions. Choosing a form solely because an English gloss contains written or is can turn a report about producing a document into a statement about its current condition.

The Greek perfect construction has its own auxiliary and restricted nonfinite form in the cited description. This does not create a rule that every Greek compound must become a structurally matching Upper Sorbian compound with the same dictionary auxiliary. The target expresses the intended event through its own constructions; a change from have-related to be-related packaging need not change who acted or when.

The source and target descriptions also distinguish Upper Sorbian from Lower Sorbian. Stone’s neighboring examples should not be combined indiscriminately: Upper Sorbian pisać and its associated forms belong to the selected target. A similarly glossed form from Lower Sorbian is not automatically an alternative spelling for the same output.

For a Greek past report, identify the event, its participant, and the time or aspect intended by the full source predicate. Then interpret the entire Upper Sorbian verb complex, including the type of participle. This avoids treating a present-shaped auxiliary as an independent timestamp or replacing an active report with a passive description merely because both contain a familiar form of be.
