Greek to Mexican Spanish: polite plural wording may address just one person

Count the listeners before selecting usted or ustedes

Greek second-person plural forms can address one person politely. Politis’s account of the politeness plural explains how the grammatical form signals distance or respectful interaction without multiplying the addressee. A Mexican Spanish translation must therefore distinguish a courteous message to an individual from a message to a group. Translating every Greek plural form as ustedes can turn one reader into several, even when every other part of the sentence remains understandable.

For a single addressee whose treatment is formal, usted provides a relevant target resource. Ustedes is its plural, and Mexican Spanish also uses ustedes for ordinary informal plural address. The number of people and the level of formality must consequently be interpreted separately. A Greek polite plural may lead to singular usted, while a Greek actual plural can lead to ustedes without necessarily making the target unusually formal.

The addressee stays second person while the verb changes agreement

The RAE explains that usted and ustedes refer to the listener but are grammatically third person. A translation must not preserve a Greek second-person verb ending merely because the message continues to address the same person. Spanish agreement changes without changing the conversational role. An appropriate third-person target verb in direct address is therefore not evidence that the translator has begun talking about somebody else.

This affects the clause beyond an overt subject pronoun. The RAE also assigns corresponding object, reflexive and possessive forms to usted and ustedes. A sentence can contain usted with an inappropriate second-person possessive and still be inconsistent. When the Greek source uses the same addressee across an instruction, a reference to their belongings and a later request, the Mexican Spanish wording must maintain one coherent treatment rather than switch grammatical systems halfway through.

Vosotros is not the default for a familiar Mexican group

The RAE’s regional account distinguishes the informal vosotros pattern of most of Spain from the ustedes pattern used in the Americas. For a Mexican target, a friendly Greek message to several companions should not be assigned vosotros simply because the original is informal. The appropriate regional plural can retain familiarity without importing that Peninsular pronoun and its verb forms.

This does not mean that every source social distinction can be discarded once ustedes is chosen. Greek can soften or distance a request through wording beyond number, and the target can preserve the intended relationship through the whole sentence. First identify whether the source plural is numerical or courteous, then choose target number, agreement and phrasing together. A formal Greek invitation to one person and an informal Greek invitation to several people may both look plural in the source, yet require different number interpretations in Mexican Spanish. The goal is to retain the actual audience and tone, not to make every Greek plural correspond to the same visible Spanish pronoun.
