Greek to Somali: us may include the listener or exclude them

A transport request needs a defined passenger group

Greek Μπορείς να μας πάρεις; can ask Can you pick us up? The object pronoun μας identifies a group including the speaker, but its form alone does not say whether the person being addressed belongs to that group. Somali distinguishes inclusive and exclusive first-person plural forms, so the intended passengers matter.

Morgan Nilsson’s Somali grammar lists the short object forms na as excluding the addressee and ina as including the addressee. These are not interchangeable spellings of a single group. A Greek request addressed to a driver ordinarily separates the driver from the passengers being collected; a different situation can include the addressee among the people affected.

The people doing the action may be a different group

Compare the original Greek statements Θα μας πάρουν, they will pick us up, and Θα σας πάρουμε, we will pick you up. Greek distinguishes speaker-group objects from addressee-group objects, and its main verb identifies the acting group. Somali must preserve both roles while also resolving inclusion where first-person plural reference requires it.

A family traveling together might tell one relative that someone will collect us, including that relative in the passengers. The same Greek μας spoken to the person providing the car can exclude that listener. The underlying trip can be unchanged; only the conversational viewpoint alters who belongs inside the pronoun.

This is not a distinction between friendly and unfriendly speech. Excluding the driver from the passenger group does not reject the driver socially. It identifies the participants affected by the pickup action. Choosing an inclusive form merely because the message is warm would alter the group being described.

Greek verb endings can also conceal an inclusive choice

Greek Θα πληρώσουμε, we will pay, can identify the travelers, the hosts, or a group containing both speaker and listener. Its first-person plural ending does not encode that choice. Nilsson distinguishes Somali short subject forms aannu, exclusive, and aynu, inclusive, alongside longer independent forms.

In a pickup arrangement, we will pay for the taxi might be a promise by the passengers to the driver, excluding the listener from the paying group. Spoken between two passengers, the same Greek sentence might include the listener. The target choice determines who accepts the cost; it is not merely an optional flourish.

The long forms annaga and innaga likewise distinguish excluding and including the addressee. They should not be inserted simply to make every Somali sentence match an explicit Greek εμείς. Greek can express the participant through verb morphology, while Somali uses its own combination of independent and short pronouns.

A concise transport conversation can switch reference from one sentence to the next: we will collect you, they will take us, and we will pay. Resolve each group separately. Carrying one earlier inclusive or exclusive choice throughout the conversation can mistakenly add the driver to the passengers or assign a payment promise to somebody who never made it.
