Greek to Mongolian Cyrillic: a named month becomes a numbered calendar expression

March is a month name in one language and a numbered month in another

Greek Μάρτιος names March, and the Greek dictionary identifies it as the third month of the year. The Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Mongolian grammar lesson explains month expressions through numbers with сар. Translating a date therefore involves recognizing the month’s calendar value rather than transliterating the Greek name into Cyrillic.

The lesson illustrates 3 сар and 3-р сар for March. It notes a stylistic distinction between cardinal and ordinal month expressions, with ordinal forms associated particularly with official styles. The visible numeral is not evidence that the target refers to a duration merely because Greek normally uses a separate word for the month.

The same month word can measure an interval

Compare the original Greek expressions τον Μάρτιο, in March, and για τρεις μήνες, for three months. The first locates an event on the calendar; the second measures how long something lasts. A target expression involving a number and сар needs the surrounding construction to establish which interpretation is intended.

That distinction can affect an invitation. A workshop scheduled in March is not necessarily a workshop lasting three months. Replacing a named month with an interval because the target has a numeral would change the commitment made to participants, even if the numerical value three was identified correctly.

A further Greek phrase, μετά από τρεις μήνες, after three months, gives a delayed point relative to another event. It neither names March nor automatically means the third calendar month after January. The starting point is supplied by the conversation. The translated temporal construction must retain that relative relationship rather than silently choosing a named month.

The day number also has its own form

The Mongolian lesson gives day-of-month expressions using a date form plus өдөр, as well as another pattern based on a numeral stem. It lists нэгний for the first and хоёрны for the second. These are calendar forms, not instructions to count two independent days.

A Greek date such as 2 Μαρτίου combines a day number with the month name in a genitive form. The target must combine the intended day and numbered month in its own calendar structure. The source genitive ending is not a separate possession claim that March owns the second day; it is part of the date expression.

The lesson connects complete year-month-day expressions with genitive morphology. A Greek invitation written with day first cannot consequently be translated by retaining all components in their original sequence and merely substituting Cyrillic words. Identify which number is the year, which is the month, and which is the day before constructing the target date.

A deadline adds a different relationship again. In March identifies an interval on the calendar, on 2 March identifies a day, and by 2 March sets a limit for an action. Their dates may contain the same month and day, but their scheduling consequences differ. Calendar conversion should preserve that source relationship rather than treat the date itself as the whole message.
