Greek to Kashmiri: why blue changes form but clean can stay unchanged

Two familiar adjectives reverse the expected pattern

Greek speakers cannot predict Kashmiri adjective behavior simply by asking whether the corresponding Greek word changes its ending. The Greek dictionary labels μπλε, blue, as indeclinable. Kashmiri blue belongs to an inflected class in Koul and Wali’s grammar. A color that looks grammatically constant in the source can therefore require several target forms.

The reverse comparison is equally useful. Greek καθαρός, καθαρή, καθαρό shows masculine, feminine, and neuter forms of clean. Kashmiri sa:ph, clean, is listed among adjectives that remain unchanged across the illustrated noun categories. The translation preserves cleanliness without reproducing the visible Greek alternation. These are separate lexical patterns, not a general claim that one language has more agreement.

Blue clothing requires target agreement

Koul and Wali give the nominative forms n’u:l for masculine singular, ni:l’ for masculine plural, ni:j for feminine singular, and ni:ji for feminine plural. Their clothing examples distinguish coats from shirts. The forms cited here use the grammar’s transliteration; the colon represents vowel length rather than punctuation separating words.

Consider a Greek shop description contrasting ένα μπλε παλτό, one blue coat, with δύο μπλε παλτά, two blue coats. Greek μπλε does not announce the change in quantity. In Kashmiri, an inflecting color adjective must be selected with the target noun’s grammatical features. Copying one dictionary color form into both descriptions would miss information required by the target construction.

The noun’s gender must also be established in Kashmiri. A Greek neuter garment name does not create a Kashmiri neuter agreement form. Nor does an association with men’s or women’s clothing determine grammatical gender. The relevant noun belongs to its own target classification, independently of the garment’s intended wearer.

Clean is not repaired by adding a color ending

The grammar illustrates unchanged sa:ph with a masculine singular room, masculine plural clothes, a feminine singular chair, and feminine plural chairs. A Greek inventory may visibly alternate forms of clean across its item labels while the corresponding Kashmiri modifier remains the same. That apparent repetition is not evidence that agreement has been overlooked.

Imagine comparing two translated labels: clean chairs and blue chairs. The same noun can be accompanied by an unchanged adjective in one label and an inflected adjective in the other. Applying a single automatic ending rule to every modifier would damage one of them. The lexical adjective class matters alongside the noun’s gender and number.

Case adds another distinction when the label becomes a sentence. The Kashmiri grammar’s blue paradigm includes dative, ablative, and ergative forms as well as nominative forms. A form suitable for a clothing list is consequently not a universal form for sentences involving that clothing. Greek case endings cannot be transferred directly: first determine how the garment participates in the Kashmiri sentence, then use the appropriate target adjective form.
