Greek to Bangla: grammatical gender and respectful reference answer different questions

A Greek gender ending is not always information about a person

Greek nouns have masculine, feminine or neuter grammatical gender, and adjectives agree with them in gender, number and case. This agreement applies in descriptions as well as within noun phrases. A feminine adjective referring to a grammatically feminine object does not establish that the object is female. A Bangla translation should preserve the property being described without inventing a natural-sex distinction from the Greek agreement ending.

Thompson explains that Bangla lacks a comparable system of grammatical gender. Its third-person pronoun se can refer to men, women or inanimate entities, and predicative adjectives do not alternate for gender. Therefore a target adjective that keeps the same shape across descriptions of different Greek nouns is not necessarily incomplete. The source agreement can be grammatically necessary without contributing a separately translatable male or female meaning.

Lexical distinctions should survive even when agreement disappears

The absence of a Bangla grammatical gender system does not imply an absence of words distinguishing people. Thompson describes lexicalized male–female contrasts and kinship vocabulary. If a Greek noun actually identifies a daughter, mother or another gender-specific relation, that lexical information should be retained. It is different from the agreement required by an otherwise inanimate noun.

This distinction helps avoid two opposite mistakes. Adding a gendered target reference to an ordinary Greek object would overtranslate morphology. Erasing a specifically identified family relationship because Bangla pronouns are gender-neutral would undertranslate vocabulary. Work out whether the source distinction is carried by the meaning of the noun, by a pronoun referring to a person, or only by concord within the noun phrase. The target can then retain the relevant meaning without reproducing every source ending.

Respect can remain relevant after gender becomes neutral

Bangla third-person reference also distinguishes ordinary and honorific choices, such as se and tini. These are not equivalents of Greek masculine and feminine pronouns. A translation cannot choose the honorific form because the Greek noun has a particular gender, or assume the ordinary form is automatically correct whenever Greek lacks an overt respect marker on a pronoun. The target choice concerns how the person is represented in the interaction.

Thompson further distinguishes how a person is addressed from how that person is discussed. A speaker can address someone with polite apni and still refer to them with an ordinary third-person form, or use familiar tumi in address and honorific third-person reference. A Greek conversation and a report of that conversation therefore require separate attention to these relationships. Do not impose one rigid respect choice on every mention simply because the same person recurs. Preserve the source’s personal identities and social relationship through appropriate Bangla wording, while allowing Greek grammatical gender to disappear where it contributes no independent meaning. A gender-neutral target pronoun can still refer precisely to the same person; precision comes from discourse and lexical reference, not from copying the source agreement pattern.
