German to Zulu: seeing, making someone see and seeing each other differ inside the verb

A shared root does not mean an unchanged event

German sehen, jemanden etwas sehen lassen and einander sehen describe different participant relationships. The first can report perception; the second introduces someone causing another person to see; the third presents a mutual relationship. Translating only the familiar word sehen would leave much of the latter two expressions unaccounted for.

Keet and Khumalo’s original isiZulu verb study illustrates bona for see, bonisa for make see, and bonana for see each other. The extensions change how the event relates its participants. Their meaning is part of the verbal construction, not decorative material that can be removed to simplify a long word.

For a German account of a demonstration, identify whether someone sees an object independently or whether another person enables that seeing. A target verb built around the right perception root may still express the wrong event if the causative relationship is omitted. The result can change who takes responsibility for showing or demonstrating something.

German sich needs interpretation before a reciprocal is chosen

IDS describes einander as expressing a mutual, symmetrical relationship. In German, a plural sentence with sich can require context to establish whether people act on themselves or on one another. The fact that several people are involved does not by itself establish reciprocity.

In a statement about people seeing each other, each participant stands in a seeing relationship to another member of the group. A statement about several people seeing a display has a plural subject but no equivalent mutual relationship. Treating both as reciprocal would introduce a relationship that the second German source never asserted.

The isiZulu study’s bonana example makes the mutual interpretation visible within the verb. For this direction, establish what the German reflexive or reciprocal expression contributes before selecting that construction. Do not turn every plural perception event into seeing each other, and do not discard an explicit einander merely because there is no separate target word in the same position.

A single written verb can retain several German relationships

The study also analyzes a complex verb based on -theng-, buy, in a sentence about selling clothes to each other. It identifies causative, applicative and reciprocal extensions within the analyzed form. The example demonstrates that one written verb can organize relationships which German may distribute across a lexical verb, an object and an expression such as einander.

A German report of a purchase and a report of a sale describe opposite sides of a transfer. A shared underlying root in the target does not make those two descriptions interchangeable. Track who provides the goods, who obtains them and whether the exchange is mutual. Those event roles matter more than choosing whichever target form most closely resembles a short dictionary entry.

These examples are illustrations of documented constructions, not a recipe for attaching every extension to any Zulu verb. The paper notes that verbal extensions interact with argument structure. An accurate German-to-Zulu rendering must therefore preserve the complete relationship expressed by the source: perception or causing perception, one-way action or reciprocity, buying or selling. A shorter-looking verb is not necessarily a simpler version of the same meaning.
