German to Turkmen: an invitation to visit needs the right destination expression

Coming to see someone is not just a name plus to

A German invitation such as “Willst du mich besuchen?” asks about a visit. Duden describes this sense of besuchen as going to see somebody and staying with them for a time. The same verb also occurs with places and institutions, so the intended destination must be established before choosing the target expression.

David Gray’s Turkmen grammar gives a specific warning about visiting people. It contrasts a construction with ýan, side, for coming to see somebody with a bare dative construction that its example interprets as a marriage proposal. The lesson is narrow but consequential: a German social visit should not be assembled mechanically from a verb for coming and a dative pronoun.

The grammar’s attested Meniň ýanyma gelip biljekmi? asks whether the person can come and see the speaker. Treat that as a checked example of the construction, rather than replacing its words individually to manufacture invitations beyond the evidence. The difference concerns the whole expression, not an ornamental extra noun that German happens to omit.

Whose side is the destination?

Gray analyses ýanyna as side plus third-person possession and dative marking, and supplies a person-number paradigm for this construction. The possessive relationship identifies the person being visited. It must follow the intended destination, rather than whichever person happens to perform the movement.

Imagine an original German arrangement in which the writer asks a colleague to visit the writer’s mother. The colleague is the visitor; the mother is the person to be visited. Changing the target destination to the colleague’s side would alter the arrangement, even though all three people might still be mentioned somewhere in the message.

Now compare a reply inviting the writer to visit the colleague instead. This reverses the direction of the proposed visit. Keep the participants explicit while preparing the German source: who travels, and who receives the visit? The target possessive and destination material must express that new relationship rather than preserve a phrase copied from the first invitation.

A destination and an existing location answer different questions

The Turkmen grammar separately lists locative and dative forms among its question and pronoun paradigms. Its nirede concerns where something is, while nirä is used for the destination in an example about heading somewhere. This distinction matters when a German exchange moves from saying where somebody is to arranging where somebody should go.

In an original German message, “I am at my sister’s” provides a current location. “Come and visit my sister” proposes movement and a visit. If a translation turns the second into a location statement, it no longer invites the recipient anywhere. If it turns the first into an invitation, it creates a request the writer did not make.

These examples are scoped to the Turkmen of Turkmenistan described by Gray. They do not establish that every literal dative involving a person has a marriage interpretation. The practical point is to use an attested visiting construction for a visit, while preserving its visitor, destination and conversational purpose. German besuchen supplies those intentions more clearly than an isolated translated preposition can.
