German to Tatar: possession inside nouns and questions inside verb forms

Mein and dein can become endings on the item

The Tatarstan Academy of Sciences’ morphology overview gives китабым for my book and китабың for your book. German mein Buch and dein Buch change a word before the noun; Tatar can encode the possessor within the noun form. A German reader should therefore not assume that a translation has omitted the owner merely because there is no separate visible possessive word before the item.

The same source gives китабы for his or her book. German sein and ihr can distinguish owners through different possessive bases, while this Tatar form does not independently preserve that gender contrast. In a German message comparing two people’s belongings, a clear named antecedent can be more useful than several successive occurrences of sein or ihr.

Its verbal examples also pair барам with бармыйм for I go and I do not go. German normally writes nicht separately. An affirmative and a negative Tatar statement can thus differ inside a word even when German expresses the contrast with a freestanding negative.

A question ending follows its own placement rules

The Tatar reference grammar describes ordinary yes-or-no questions formed with -my or -me following personal endings. German frequently signals a yes-or-no question by putting its finite verb before the subject. The Tatar result need not reproduce that inversion to express the same request for information.

The grammar explicitly notes an exception in the greeting Isänmesez?, where the question element precedes the personal ending. A German reader who learns a greeting first should therefore not use its internal order as the universal pattern for every later question. A familiar expression may preserve a construction-specific arrangement.

The reference also discusses interrogative-word questions separately. This matters when a German message asks where, when or who rather than merely asking for confirmation. Do not add a memorized yes-or-no ending to every translated question simply because the German sentence ends with a question mark. Identify what kind of information is being requested.

Tatar vowel letters are not German spelling substitutions

The academy’s phonetic description distinguishes ә, ө and ү among the Tatar vowels, alongside other front and back vowel categories. German speakers may find ö and ü useful points of orientation when learning the sounds, but familiar German vowel spellings are not interchangeable with Tatar letters. Replacing ө or ү with a Latin character changes the written text.

The same description explains vowel harmony and the behavior of consonants beside different vowel groups. Consequently, a change in a Tatar ending can follow the target word’s sound pattern rather than a new grammatical meaning absent from German. Compare the ending’s function together with its base, instead of demanding one invariant spelling wherever German uses the same possessive or personal expression.

For reading aloud, distinguish the identity of the written vowel from a broad German pronunciation approximation. A Roman aid can help explain an example, but it should not be used to overwrite the Cyrillic translation. The target spelling preserves distinctions that a casual German transcription may fail to represent.
