German to Mongolian: a calendar year is not a year of waiting

Separate the date of an event from its duration

German uses Jahr when locating an event in a calendar and when measuring how long something lasts. Mongolian distinguishes these functions lexically: the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies lesson presents он for a calendar year and жил for a measured year. Its short examples include 2016 он and 2 жил. Those are different kinds of time reference, even though both German expressions contain the same noun.

Imagine an original German account of employment: someone joined an organization in 2016 and later worked on a project for two years. The first detail locates a beginning; the second measures an interval. A target that treats the project duration as a calendar label changes the account. Conversely, replacing the joining year with an elapsed period would leave the reader without the actual date.

Before interpreting a result, ask what the number answers: which year, or how many years? The digits alone cannot settle this. Preserve the surrounding German phrase that identifies the relationship rather than sending a detached number and expecting its intended function to survive.

An ongoing interval needs its starting relationship

Duden defines temporal seit as identifying the point, or the beginning of the interval, from which a situation has continued. Its example seit gestern illustrates the starting-point use. German vor, in its temporal use, places something earlier than a stated reference point. These prepositions therefore do different work even when the accompanying amount of time is identical.

In an original service message, a device that has been unusable since yesterday is still described as unusable at the relevant present moment. A device that stopped yesterday may have been repaired since then. Translating the first report as merely a dated breakdown would remove the ongoing problem that explains why the customer is writing.

This is not a rule to replace every occurrence of seit with one Mongolian expression. First establish the source event and whether its state continues. Then assess the entire target construction. A recognizable word for year or day is insufficient evidence that the starting relationship has been preserved.

Do not mistake a day on the calendar for a full day elapsed

The Mongolian lesson similarly distinguishes хоног as a measured twenty-four-hour day from өдөр in calendar-day expressions. It gives 40 хоног as a duration and illustrates numbered dates separately. That distinction matters when German Tag appears in both a deadline and an account of waiting.

Consider an original accommodation exchange that mentions arrival on the seventh and a stay lasting several days. The arrival expression answers when; the stay expression answers how long. These details must remain separate even if the final sentence rearranges them. Do not infer an extra overnight stay simply from an unfamiliar target time noun.

For a message containing both dates and intervals, read the timeline back as events: arrival, start of the relevant state, and elapsed period. If a relationship is unclear in the German input, clarify that relationship there. Adding a guessed date in the target would create apparent precision without recovering what the writer meant.
