German to Konkani: the actor need not control every past-tense agreement form
German nominative subjects are not a target case template
German identifies an ordinary nominal subject through the nominative, and its finite verb cross-references the subject’s person and number. A Konkani translation must retain the person who acted, but the source nominative form does not determine the target participant marking. John Peterson and Govind Mopkar describe split alignment in Standard Goan Konkani: in simple past and perfect constructions, transitive actors can receive ergative marking while intransitive subjects have nominative marking.
Thus a German narrative meaning “She arrived, and she opened the parcel” mentions one woman in two subject roles. The arrival has no parcel-like object; the opening affects the parcel. The Konkani case pattern can distinguish those constructions without introducing a different actor. A changed form for the woman does not itself mean the translation has switched from her to somebody else.
The agreement ending can instead follow the affected item
The study explains, with stated simplifications, that agreement in relevant past and perfect constructions can follow a nominative object when the actor is not nominative. It also describes third-person singular neuter default agreement where no suitable nominative participant is available. A German reader should therefore not assume that every target gender or number ending identifies the actor in exactly the German way.
For a source meaning “He opened the box,” the box is what was opened, while the man performs the action. If the relevant Konkani construction makes agreement sensitive to the object, a target ending associated with that object does not turn the man into the box or identify the box as the opener. The grammatical roles must be recovered from the full case and verb construction rather than inferred from one familiar gender label.
A present statement cannot be converted by changing only its time word
The authors contrast this past pattern with finite categories such as present, future, and past imperfective, where the actor and intransitive subject have direct-case marking in their description. A translation of a German present report and its past counterpart may therefore need changes in participant marking as well as in the verb. Keeping a target clause unchanged and adding an equivalent of yesterday would not necessarily create the intended past construction.
Compare “She opens the parcel,” “She opened the parcel,” and “The parcel arrived.” The first two share an actor and object but differ in temporal construction; the third promotes neither opening nor a hidden opener, because arrival is a different event. The Konkani resource also notes that object marking depends on animacy and definiteness. Its discussion concerns Standard Goan Konkani and should not be treated as an identical prescription for every Konkani variety. For this direction, German subject case and finite agreement help identify the source event, while Konkani assigns its own case and agreement relationships. Retaining those distinct grammatical functions prevents a superficially plausible past ending from silently changing who did what to which item.
