German to Filipino: whether our includes the reader and why ko is not always ownership

Unser does not settle whether the recipient belongs to the group

German possessive unser identifies a relationship to the speaker’s group. Its ending changes with the following noun and its grammatical case. That form does not itself distinguish a group that includes the present recipient from a group that excludes them. The surrounding message supplies that information.

Northern Illinois University’s Tagalog teaching material distinguishes namin, an exclusive first-person plural NG-form, from inclusive natin. In possessive use, the distinction concerns whether the addressee belongs to the group identified by our. This is a useful contrast for Filipino messages grounded in the Tagalog constructions taught there.

A German phrase about our house might identify the home shared by writer and recipient, or the writer’s household addressing an outside visitor. Choosing the target solely from a bilingual equivalent for unser can silently place the visitor inside the owning group. Decide membership before adjusting the target possessive to the rest of the sentence.

The number of possessions is a different question

IDS explains that German possessive articles have both a stem identifying the possessor relationship and endings determined by the possessed noun. Forms such as mein and meine do not mean that the speaker has become several owners. Similarly, plural possessions and a plural group of owners must be distinguished in a phrase with unser.

The NIU material places the possessive after the possessed noun and gives kotse ko for my car and bahay namin for our house with an exclusive group. The post-noun position differs from German possessive articles before the noun. Its exclusivity distinction still concerns people, rather than a count of houses.

For a German family message about shared belongings, ask separately how many items are involved and which people the ownership group includes. A change from one house to several properties does not automatically change an exclusive group into an inclusive one. A change in the recipient’s membership can matter even when the same single house remains the topic.

A form used for my can identify an actor elsewhere

NIU also describes NG-forms in actor roles in the constructions it presents. Its example Binili ko ang damit para kay Rosa uses ko in an account of buying clothing for Rosa. In that sentence, the form identifies the actor of buying rather than declaring that the clothing belongs to the speaker.

This matters when German descriptions distinguish buying, owning and receiving. The buyer can purchase something for another person; ownership need not stay with the buyer. A target containing ko is not automatically a translation of German mein, and its presence does not establish who will finally possess the purchased item.

Interpret the Filipino construction before evaluating the apparent possessive. German can identify an actor through a subject pronoun and an owner through a possessive article, while the NIU examples show the same NG-form participating in different constructions. Preserve who bought the item, who is meant to receive it and which group an ownership expression includes. Treating every occurrence of an NG-form as a possession label can change a straightforward German purchase message into an unintended ownership claim.
