German to Simplified Chinese: preserve the value while changing number and date order

Einundzwanzig does not keep its spoken order in Mandarin

German compound number words such as einundzwanzig put the unit before the tens and connect them with und. The familiar spelling can tempt a reader to process twenty-one as one followed by twenty. A translation into Mandarin needs the numerical value first, not that German component sequence.

Wheatley’s MIT course explains that numbers before shí multiply ten and numbers after it add units. It gives èrshíyī for twenty-one and sānshíyī for thirty-one. German einundzwanzig and Mandarin èrshíyī therefore organize their spoken parts differently while identifying the same quantity.

This matters in a German message containing both an amount and a date. Recognize each complete number before choosing its target expression. Reading the German word left to right and translating its components separately risks reversing the intended quantity; preserving the original written digits alongside the interpreted value can help expose that particular mistake.

A year is not necessarily read as one large counting number

The Mandarin course presents calendar dates in year–month–day order and notes that years are usually read as a sequence of digits. Its example yī-jiǔ-jiǔ-liù nián identifies 1996. That reading differs from constructing an ordinary quantity of one thousand nine hundred and ninety-six.

For a German source containing the year 1996, determine whether the number is actually a year, an amount, or part of a reference. The same four digits can serve all three purposes. A date construction should not be imposed on an order number merely because the digits resemble a plausible year.

A German-style numeric illustration such as 03.08.2026 should be resolved into its named components before translation: the third day of August in 2026. Once the intended date is established, the target can present year, month and day without inviting the reader to infer component order from punctuation alone. This does not establish the meaning of every ambiguous numeric date encountered outside that context.

A day number and a rank do different work

Wheatley gives dì as the prefix used for ordinal numbers and separately explains date expressions with hào or written rì. A calendar day is thus not formed merely by taking a German ordinal suffix and finding a matching Chinese suffix for it. The construction identifies the number’s role.

In German, der dritte and am dritten August share an ordinal-looking form but occur in different expressions. One can rank an item in a sequence; the other identifies a day of a named month. A German passage saying the third meeting on the third of August contains two numerical relationships, even though the same value appears twice.

The Simplified Chinese writing option should preserve those relationships rather than flatten them into a repeated bare three. Establish which number counts or ranks an event, which names a month, and which identifies a calendar day. The resulting expression can change its order and grammatical packaging while retaining the actual schedule.

These examples describe Mandarin number and date constructions. Choosing Simplified Chinese changes the requested character forms; it does not mean that German numeric punctuation or spoken unit-before-ten order should be transferred unchanged into the target text.
