German to Bangla: dictionary forms, short instructions and conjugated event reports
A German infinitive can do more than name an activity
The IDS discussion of German directives includes nonfinite instructions such as Fenster geschlossen halten! The expression asks for behaviour; it is not simply a dictionary entry for the activity. German grammatical shape and communicative purpose must therefore be read together before choosing Bangla wording.
This matters in notices, checklists and short instructions, where a source phrase may omit an explicit person. The absence of a named subject does not turn every such phrase into a neutral label. A heading naming an activity, a request to perform it and a report that it happened give readers different information.
Before translating a German sign, identify what the reader is supposed to do. A sentence asking someone to keep a window closed should not become a title about closing windows or an announcement that somebody closed them earlier. Finding the right root for close is only one part of preserving that instruction.
The Bangla dictionary form is not the whole conjugated verb
The University of Texas Bangla course explains that its citation forms are verbal nouns. It distinguishes the root used in conjugation from the suffix in the citation form, illustrating lekh-a and patha-no among its examples. An English gloss beginning with to is a convenience of explanation, not evidence that every Bangla citation form behaves like a German infinitive.
The same course describes a conjugated Bangla verb as combining a root with aspect, tense and person information. It demonstrates kha-cch-il-am for a first-person past continuous event. The final form carries grammatical information beyond the lexical activity, even when it is written compactly.
A German reader checking a Bangla translation should consequently avoid treating the dictionary-shaped form as automatically complete. Determine whether the target expression names an activity or functions as the intended predicate. Equally, do not interpret an unfamiliar ending as a new activity merely because it is absent from the dictionary form.
Read a procedure and a completion log differently
Imagine a German workshop sheet with two adjacent columns: one lists tasks and the other records what a participant was doing during a demonstration. The activity words may recur across both columns, but the columns do different work. One organises actions to be carried out; the other places an action in an account of events.
For each translated entry, recover its role before comparing word shapes. Does the Bangla text still function as a task label, an instruction or an account of an ongoing action? A recognisable root cannot compensate for changing one role into another. Nor should a compact conjugated target form be expanded merely to reproduce the number of German words.
When a German fragment is ambiguous outside its layout, include the heading or a short explanation of its purpose with the text to be translated. That supplies the missing distinction between naming, directing and reporting. It is more useful than repeatedly replacing one Bangla dictionary form while leaving the intended function unspecified.
