German to Assamese: reading instructions and the address information inside a verb

Two German imperative forms do not provide three Assamese address choices

The German IDS account contrasts lies with plural lest and explains that ordinary imperatives can omit du or ihr. It separately describes the formal request construction with Sie, where that pronoun is required. A German instruction can therefore signal its audience through a combination of verb form, pronoun and the surrounding relationship.

Boruah’s primary discussion of Assamese presents contrasting reading instructions with porh, porha and porhok, associated with different second-person address choices. The three-way distinction in that discussion is not an exact replacement chart for German du, ihr and Sie. Number and social relationship must be considered separately.

For a German reading instruction to a class, lest indicates several addressees in familiar address. It does not automatically identify which Assamese relationship is appropriate between the writer and those readers. Likewise, a German singular lies should not receive the shortest Assamese form merely because both source and target expressions can omit a separate pronoun.

An omitted pronoun need not make the request incomplete

IDS states that an explicit subject pronoun is not obligatory in the ordinary German imperative. Adding du can underline the instruction. A source writer can thus deliberately use an instruction without a separately written word for you, rather than having accidentally left out the person being addressed.

The Assamese study also describes imperative examples without an overt subject, where the verb form supports the intended address interpretation. In this setting, a target sentence without a separate second-person pronoun is not automatically missing the recipient. Its address information may be distributed differently from the German source.

Distinguish absence from emphasis. If German explicitly includes du to single out one participant, a neutral Assamese instruction may fail to preserve that contrast even if its verb form identifies the right address relationship. If the German instruction is neutral, adding an independently stressed target pronoun can instead make the request sound more pointed than intended.

A conversational question can leave a different ambiguity

Boruah notes overlap between an honorific second-person interpretation and a third-person interpretation in certain Assamese questions when the pronoun is omitted. This is a narrower observation than claiming every omitted pronoun can always be reconstructed uniquely. The paper’s own examples demonstrate that verbal inflection is not sufficient in every context.

German distinguishes directly addressing somebody from asking about another person through pronoun choices and clause structure. When translating a German exchange, preserve whether the writer asks the recipient about their own action or asks about somebody else’s action. A target form compatible with both readings may need the relevant person made explicit.

The study focuses on conversational omission and discusses written usage separately. Its observations should not become a blanket rule to remove subjects throughout a German letter. Evaluate each instruction and question according to its function: a direct request, an emphasized selection of one reader, or an enquiry about a third person. Assamese address choices should express that specific relationship rather than simply reproduce the German count of pronouns.
