Finnish to Turkish: similar-looking endings can express different relationships

Finnish adessive possession is not Turkish accompaniment

Finnish UD illustrates Minulla on kynä as a possessive construction: the speaker has a pen. The adessive personal form identifies the possessor. Its ending is not an instruction to introduce a companion or an instrument into the Turkish translation.

The Turkish UD case description explains that -(y)lA can express an instrument or accompaniment in its examples. A Finnish form ending in similar letters therefore cannot be translated by attaching a visually familiar Turkish ending to the same person. Establish whether that person owns something, accompanies someone or performs another role.

This is useful in a message about equipment. Someone saying that they have a tool is not necessarily saying that they are using it, travelling with it or accompanying its owner. The target’s grammatical relation should follow the complete Finnish clause rather than the superficial resemblance of its final syllables.

Location and means of travel require separate analysis

White’s Finnish textbook contrasts location forms such as asemalla with corresponding destination forms. Its examples answer where somebody is and where somebody is going. A location ending in a Finnish noun does not automatically identify the means by which the person travels.

The Turkish documentation illustrates Ankara’ya trenle gitti with train-related instrumental marking: someone went to Ankara by train. The train supplies the means of the journey; Ankara supplies its destination. A Turkish sentence must preserve that distinction even if a Finnish source packages location and transport through endings that look related.

The same Turkish page gives Evdeyim for being at home. That is a location assertion, not a report of travelling home. When a Finnish passage moves between being somewhere and going somewhere, retain the movement or its absence. Changing the target case while keeping the same place name can change that event relationship.

A personal ending can instead identify a companion or an embedded actor

Kielibuusti gives minun kanssani for with me. The Finnish personal suffix occurs on a postposition in this expression; it does not assert that another person is owned. Unlike the possessive clause above, this phrase introduces accompaniment. The shared personal reference should not obscure the different relationship.

The Turkish case documentation also warns through its examples that case functions extend beyond their most familiar spatial meanings. Dative can occur with a verb expressing being upset about news, and genitive can occur with a postposition. The target case label alone cannot decide what the Finnish writer means.

Kielibuusti further shows personal endings on certain non-finite verbs, where they identify the actor of an embedded action. In a longer Finnish travel instruction, that actor may differ from the companion mentioned elsewhere. Preserve who performs each action before choosing Turkish case and clause constructions.

For this pair, the important connections are concrete: who has the equipment, where the person is, where they travel, what means they use and who accompanies them. Both languages can attach grammatical information to words, but each expression must be interpreted through those relationships. Transferring an ending by appearance can preserve familiar-looking morphology while changing the actual journey or possession being described.
