Finnish to Tatar: a genitive-shaped object is not an owner

The Finnish book can be the thing read

Finnish luin kirjan presents reading a book as a whole or completed event in the Language Office’s object explanation. The book’s genitive-shaped ending belongs to the object construction. It does not mean that somebody read an unnamed possession belonging to the book or that an owner must be introduced in translation.

This matters for Tatar because a target noun’s object marking has to follow the target construction. Recognising the Finnish form as genitive is not enough: first identify it as the thing read. Converting its case name directly into a possessive relationship would change the participants rather than preserve the reading event.

The corresponding Finnish partitive expression luin kirjaa presents an open or unfinished reading situation. The same physical book can be involved in both reports. A change of ending can therefore concern the event’s boundary without requiring a new referent or a change in ownership.

Tatar’s object-marking distinction concerns reference

The Tatar UD overview describes definite direct objects as accusative-marked and indefinite ones as bare. This provides a different question from the Finnish reading contrast: how the object is identified in the discourse. A known book can be read without finishing it, and a completed reading event need not concern a book previously mentioned.

The overview is a short, developing grammatical description, not a complete account of every Tatar object-marking condition. Its practical value here is to block a false equation between Finnish total objects and Tatar marked objects. One describes a source construction with event and quantity conditions; the other belongs to the target’s way of expressing its object.

If a Finnish passage reports progress through an assigned volume, the volume remains identified even while the reading is unfinished. A Tatar translation should not discard that reference because the Finnish noun is partitive. Conversely, the completed reading of a newly introduced book should not become a claim that the audience already knows which book is meant.

A negative Finnish object needs another explanation

The Finnish Language Office also explains partitive object forms in negative clauses. Thus a negative statement about reading a book can contain partitive morphology without asserting that an actual reading process is underway. A translation must preserve the denial rather than convert it into an affirmative report of partial progress.

The Tatar object still has to be interpreted for reference within that negative account. Negation of reading does not by itself make a particular assigned book cease to be identifiable. Treat the event’s polarity, its presentation as bounded or open, and the object’s reference as separate pieces of meaning instead of asking one Finnish ending to decide all three.

For this pair, identify the source book as an object before selecting target marking. Then preserve what the Finnish sentence actually says about reading it. This prevents a case label from inventing an owner, a completion claim from inventing familiarity, or a negative clause from becoming a story about unfinished reading.
