Finnish to Setswana: a named person and companions are not several people with the same name

Setswana can group people around one named participant

The SADiLaR Setswana noun description gives Pule and boPule, with the latter meaning Pule and company. The prefixed form does not require several different people all named Pule. It can identify a group organized around the named person.

A Finnish source may list the participants individually instead. White’s textbook gives Ulla ja Mark käyvät torilla melkein joka lauantai, identifying Ulla and Mark as the people who visit the market almost every Saturday. If a Setswana rendering uses an associative group expression, it must still preserve the participants the Finnish text actually establishes.

The difference matters when a Finnish invitation names one host and mentions their companions elsewhere. A target group form can be useful when that group is already clear, but it should not introduce unnamed companions into a source that concerns only one person. Conversely, interpreting it as several identically named individuals would misread its grouping function.

Family labels can have both collective and ordinary plural readings

The portal gives mma and bomma for mother and mother with company, and explicitly notes that the relevant plural prefix can have both associative and distributive uses. In its explanation, a related form can refer to mothers or to mother and company. The prefix alone does not settle which people are present.

For Finnish-to-Setswana translation, examine whether the source names several mothers, one mother with other people, or a family group whose members have been specified. These possibilities overlap socially but are different participant descriptions. A report that a mother came with children should not become a report that several mothers arrived.

Finnish UD treats number separately from possession and other noun relationships. A plural case form in a Finnish family expression does not, by itself, provide a ready-made associative group. Recover the people from the complete phrase and passage rather than adding companions whenever a kinship term appears.

The group’s action and routine still need to remain the same

White’s market example also encodes a routine: almost every Saturday. A translation preserving Ulla and Mark but omitting the frequency would lose part of the claim. An associative target noun can identify who is involved, but it does not replace the time expression or the verb’s event interpretation.

Her discussion of käydä distinguishes regular visiting from a relatively quick round trip in other contexts. A Finnish sentence about briefly visiting somebody is therefore not automatically a description of a standing social group or an ongoing habit. Read the event and its participants together.

The Setswana portal also explains that noun classes underpin agreement with verbs and modifiers. Once the intended group is chosen, the target construction should be consistent with it. Agreement material does not create additional companions; it responds to the chosen noun expression.

For this pair, keep three facts separate: whether the source describes one person or a group, whether a named or kinship-labelled person anchors that group, and what the group actually does. This prevents the target’s compact social grouping from replacing an explicit Finnish list with a different set of people or a different kind of visit.
