Finnish to Samoan: inviting someone to eat requires the right we

A Finnish invitation can leave participant details to the conversation

White’s Finnish textbook pairs Minulla on nälkä with Mennäänkö syömään? The speaker reports hunger and suggests going to eat. The question’s practical force comes from the exchange: it is an invitation, rather than an announcement that a group has already eaten. A Samoan translation should preserve that move from a personal state to a proposed joint activity.

Finnish UD distinguishes singular and plural person forms without a grammatical inclusive-versus-exclusive category. The source can therefore rely on context to establish whether the addressee belongs to the group. For Samoan, that membership can require an explicit pronoun choice.

Two people can mean you and me, or somebody else and me

Billington’s Samoan teaching table contrasts tā'ua, including the listener in a two-person group, with mā'ua, excluding the listener. They do not differ merely in style. Replacing one with the other changes who is being invited or described.

For the Finnish meal invitation, determine whether the proposed group is the speaker and addressee, the speaker and another person, or a larger gathering. A message informing somebody that the speaker and a friend are going to eat is different from asking that person to join. The same general topic of a meal cannot settle the target pronoun.

The teaching resource separately gives forms for groups of three or more. A Finnish invitation to several colleagues should not be narrowed to two simply because the immediate chat has one reader. The intended participants can include people named earlier or present in the situation. Keep that membership stable across the translation.

Hunger is not the same claim as wanting a particular meal

White’s Finnish expression describes the speaker’s state. It does not identify a restaurant, a food preference or an amount to order. Those details would need separate source wording. The accompanying invitation proposes an action in response to the state without supplying all its arrangements.

The Samoan resource illustrates a hunger expression built with fia and eat-related material. Its meaning should be interpreted as a complete expression rather than expanded into an invented order for a specific dish. A target can use different lexical building blocks while preserving the same limited information about the speaker.

The proposal and its timing belong with the participant choice

Turku’s Finnish tense lesson shows future reference expressed through present-tense forms with future time expressions. If a Finnish meal suggestion includes tomorrow or another later time, keep that planning information attached to the proposed action. An inclusive pronoun alone does not establish whether the group is eating now or arranging to eat later.

Billington’s lesson uses separate preverbal markers to illustrate different time and aspect readings. Choosing a group form and choosing a suitable verb construction are therefore linked decisions in the complete message. A rendering that identifies the right people but turns the proposal into a completed meal changes the exchange.

For this particular invitation, preserve who is hungry, who is being included, how many people are intended and whether eating is proposed or already happening. These are concrete contributions of the Finnish conversation, and Samoan can require them to be distributed across different words.
