Finnish to Nyanja: count houses without relying on the noun ending

A Finnish singular-looking noun can describe several items

A Finnish message about inspecting three houses contains a number that matters more than an isolated noun ending. A translator preparing a Nyanja version must preserve that quantity even when the two languages distribute number information differently. Counting buildings, counting visits and identifying a building by its address are separate tasks.

A Taste of Finnish explains that nouns following cardinal numbers greater than one normally take the singular partitive in the construction it teaches. Its ticket-purchase example uses kaksi with lippua for two tickets. The noun’s grammatical form therefore does not mean that the customer is purchasing only one ticket. Apply that distinction when reading a numbered list of properties.

For the target language, Mchombo’s account of Chichewa supplies an instructive contrast. Its table of class 9 and class 10 nouns lists nyúmba for house or houses, with the same noun shape. Agreement elsewhere can carry the singular–plural distinction. This is evidence about the Chichewa variety described in the chapter, rather than a guarantee about every regional Nyanja usage.

Separate an address from the number of properties

Consider an inspection itinerary with one entry for house number three and another instruction to inspect three houses. The numeral identifies one building in the first case and counts buildings in the second. Removing the surrounding Finnish wording could make those entries look deceptively similar. Keep address labels attached to their numbers throughout translation.

The Chichewa noun example also shows why checking only whether the translated word for house appears plural is insufficient. An unchanged noun can belong to a plural construction. Examine the complete target phrase and its agreement instead of adding a plural-looking ending simply to make the number more visible to a Finnish reader.

Agreement is not a general instruction to classify a noun by what it refers to. Mchombo illustrates a human-denoting noun in class 7 whose subject marker follows that grammatical class. The relevant contrast is between noun classes and agreement patterns, rather than between people and objects. Avoid treating all references to residents as interchangeable with the agreement attached to their homes.

Keep the practical totals independently recoverable

An itinerary can contain three houses but five inspection visits because two buildings need a return visit. Preserve both totals if the Finnish source gives them. Repeating a house noun five times or interpreting every visit as a different property would change the workload and the number of addresses involved.

The same care applies to corrections. If the sender changes the property total while retaining an address ending in the same digit, update only the quantity being corrected. A clearly labelled count and an intact address let the Nyanja reader distinguish the revised assignment from a change of destination. The useful result is an itinerary whose buildings, visits and identifiers remain separately understandable.
