Finnish to Konkani: tense labels alone cannot date a promise and its intended action

Finnish present morphology can describe a future departure

A Taste of Finnish illustrates Sofia lähtee ensi viikolla, Sofia leaves next week, in its explanation of present-tense forms with future reference. The time phrase locates the departure later than the current exchange. A Konkani translation must preserve that timing rather than insist that a present-looking Finnish verb describes something happening now.

An announcement of next week’s trip differs from a report that the traveler is leaving at this moment. If the source supplies the later time explicitly, that information controls the event’s interpretation. Matching grammar labels without retaining the time phrase can create a false immediate departure.

A promise has its own time as well as the time of the promised event

The Finnish learning resource on infinitive complements gives Minä lupaan tulla huomenna, I promise to come tomorrow. The promise is made now, while coming is projected for tomorrow. In the Finnish example, huomenna dates coming, not promising; moving that date onto the promise would alter the sequence. These are two related events with different timing, not a single completed arrival. The target must preserve both relationships.

Peterson and Mopkar’s Standard Goan Konkani study distinguishes an isolated past promise from a particular construction involving habitual earlier promises or intentions. The authors document a future participle with past-habitual interpretation in that restricted construction. Its category name therefore cannot be used as an independent calendar date for every predicate containing it.

The practical comparison with Finnish is that visible morphology can require interpretation within a larger construction in both languages. The source present departure can be future, while a target form called future participle can participate in a documented earlier habitual background. Those facts do not make every present Finnish sentence equivalent to every Konkani future participle.

One promise is not a recurring commitment

The Konkani study explicitly excludes a single nonhabitual past promise from the special past-habitual future-participle pattern. Its example about a promise made yesterday uses another past construction. A Finnish account of one earlier promise should therefore not become a repeated intention merely because a target form was selected by a future-related label.

Similarly, the Finnish promise to come tomorrow does not establish a history of repeated promises. It also does not assert that tomorrow’s visit will certainly occur. The translation must distinguish the commitment from its fulfillment and avoid turning one undertaking into a long-running habitual state.

For Finnish into Konkani, locate the promise and its intended action separately, preserve any explicit date phrase and determine whether recurrence is actually asserted. Build the target construction around those facts rather than matching present and future terminology. The cited findings concern Standard Goan Konkani and a restricted class of promise-like predicates; they do not license a universal reinterpretation of every future-looking form across all Konkani varieties.
