Finnish to German: mennään can invite us to act rather than report a passive event

Finnish passive-shaped forms have more than one conversational use

A Taste of Finnish explains that the form used in Mennään saunaan can invite a group to go to the sauna. It also illustrates the same grammatical family in colloquial first-person plural reports and in impersonal statements about what people do. A German translation must identify which function the particular Finnish message performs.

The distinction matters because an invitation includes the speaker in a proposed action, while an impersonal statement can describe a general practice without naming an acting group. Translating every passive-shaped form into a German passive could suppress the invitation. Translating every one as let us could turn a factual observation into a new proposal.

German distinguishes a group proposal from a report and a question

The IDS account of exhortative forms contrasts gehen wir in an appropriately intoned invitation with wir gehen as a statement and gehen wir with questioning intonation as a question. The pronoun and verb can look very similar while the communicative function changes through order and intonation.

For the Finnish sauna invitation, the German construction needs to retain the proposed joint action. Merely putting wir into a statement would report what the group does or plans, rather than necessarily inviting participation. Conversely, question punctuation could ask whether departure is happening instead of encouraging the group to leave.

IDS also requires the speaker pronoun in this group-exhortation construction. Omitting wir would not simply shorten the invitation while retaining the same grammatical pattern. The IDS analysis calls the speaker-including construction adhortative and distinguishes it from a narrowly morphological imperative. That terminology helps avoid a false requirement that Finnish and German use the same formal mood category. The useful match is the invitation’s inclusion of the speaker and intended group, not identical grammar labels.

Colloquial we does not always issue a fresh instruction

The Finnish course contrasts colloquial Me mennään Nuuksioon with standard Me menemme Nuuksioon for a report about going to Nuuksio. Both identify a first-person plural group. The passive-shaped colloquial verb does not remove that group or automatically convert the message into an invitation.

If a Finnish speaker tells someone else where their group is heading, German must not automatically invite that recipient along. The addressee may be hearing about a trip without being a member of the traveling party. An erroneous let-us construction could change the group’s membership as well as the purpose of the message.

For this direction, distinguish a proposed collective action, a colloquial report about the speaker’s group and an impersonal practice. Then express the appropriate German sentence function and participant reference. The same Finnish form family can support several uses; its surrounding pronoun, conversational setting and intended response determine whether German should report, ask or invite rather than merely reproduce a passive-shaped verb.
