Finnish to Divehi: respectful address does not map to a plural pronoun alone

Finnish polite plural forms may address one person

Kielitoimiston ohjepankki explains that Finnish respectful te address uses second-person plural forms even for one recipient. In compound past forms, however, the participle remains singular for that individual. Its Oletteko kuullut? contrasts with Oletteko kuulleet?, addressed to several people. When translating into Divehi, the plural-looking auxiliary cannot establish how many people the message addresses. The rest of the construction provides essential evidence.

The same guidance applies plural possessive morphology in respectful singular address. Thus a reference to the recipient’s belongings does not necessarily describe shared property belonging to a group. Before choosing a Divehi expression, establish whether the Finnish message addresses one respected individual or multiple recipients. Capitalization is not decisive either: the guidance allows both capitalized and lowercase te. Preserve the actual number of addressees separately from the respect or distance conveyed by the source wording.

Divehi address has regional and historical distinctions

Fritz’s descriptive grammar documents a standard-language pronoun system differentiated by honorific level, alongside a different situation in southern varieties. Her account relates the standard distinctions to social position and describes the historical background of the highest levels. This is not equivalent to Finnish choosing one plural-looking form for a single respected recipient. A Divehi choice can participate in a wider system of pronouns and verbs rather than being merely a number substitution.

For a Finnish service message, use the source’s respectful intention as evidence about tone, not as evidence that the recipient occupies a particular inherited social rank. Fritz’s material also warns against treating the standard-language system as uniform across the Maldives: the southern dialects described do not share the same formal levels. A local conversational wording and a standard written response may therefore differ without either being a literal failure to reproduce Finnish te. Interpret the target register within the variety actually being used.

An ordinary Finnish you is not permission to sound accusatory

Gnanadesikan’s grammar describes kalē, a second-person singular form, as avoided in modern standard Divehi because it can sound accusatory. It discusses alternatives and regional differences, including rural usage that does not share the same avoidance. A Finnish sentence using singular sinä can be entirely ordinary; translating it by selecting the simplest-looking singular entry in a Divehi pronoun table may therefore change the interpersonal effect.

The grammar also distinguishes deferential first-person forms from honorific expressions elevating an addressee. This means that a polite Divehi rendering can require attention to how the writer refers to themselves as well as how they address the reader. Finnish polite plural marking does not separately encode all those choices. In a request followed by a response about what I can do for you, preserve which participant each expression identifies while matching the intended level of respect. Avoid treating a historical literal meaning of a deferential form as the writer’s literal claim about their status.
