Finnish to Belarusian: a past report can require gender that hän does not disclose

Finnish can identify a winner without identifying gender

The Finnish Universal Dependencies person documentation gives hän voitti, he or she won. The third-person pronoun identifies one person without resolving gender. As Finland’s explanation of hän confirms, the pronoun is used for people of different genders rather than functioning as a hidden equivalent of masculine he.

A Belarusian rendering of a short Finnish past report may therefore require information not contained in that pronoun alone. The fact that the action happened earlier does not settle the participant’s gender. A name, an earlier explicit identification or the established conversation can provide relevant context, but a default assumption should not be treated as a source fact.

Belarusian past forms distinguish gender and number

Chris Marchant’s Belarusian grammar explains that past-tense forms inflect for gender and number rather than person. Its reading paradigm includes masculine чытаў and feminine чытала. These are forms of reading, not ready-made translations of the Finnish winning example; they illustrate the target agreement distinction.

The directional issue is that one Finnish report can leave a choice open that Belarusian morphology makes visible. Selecting a masculine past form merely because the source pronoun stands before the verb would add an unsupported interpretation. Selecting feminine agreement from a nearby noun instead of the actual subject could likewise assign the reported action to the wrong person.

A target past ending also does not independently distinguish speaker from addressee or a third person, as the grammar’s description makes clear. The complete Belarusian clause must preserve who performed the event. Recognising the correct gender alone cannot repair a change from the person discussed to the person writing the message.

Number is explicit even when gender remains open

The Finnish documentation contrasts its singular example with he päättivät, they decided. That pronoun is plural, despite its resemblance to the English masculine singular word he. In a Finnish-source translation, reading it through English spelling would incorrectly turn a decision by several people into one man’s decision.

Belarusian plural past agreement provides its own number choice. A translator should not force a singular gender selection where the Finnish source actually identifies a plural group. Conversely, an unresolved gender in hän does not justify multiplying that singular referent into several people. Number and gender are separate parts of the interpretation; an unspecified gender does not erase the explicit singular count.

For Finnish into Belarusian, establish the source subject’s identity and number before choosing past agreement. Where a singular person’s gender is known from the exchange, use that evidence rather than guessing from hän. Where the source gives a group, preserve its plurality. The target inflection must express the same earlier event and participant, while any added grammatical distinction should remain consistent with the information actually available.
