Finnish to Armenian: keep a video call’s location references anchored to the right scene

Pointing at a screen can change what there refers to

A Finnish description given during a video call may point to a visible place or refer to a location outside the picture. Armenian translation should preserve that reference, not merely replace every occurrence of there with one convenient word. The participants may be looking at the same image while sitting in different physical rooms.

A Taste of Finnish distinguishes täällä for the speaker’s location, tuolla for a place visibly pointed out and siellä for another location outside the immediate view in its introductory examples. This teaching distinction helps explain why a short Finnish location word can carry more context than an English gloss such as there suggests.

The Armenian Universal Dependencies documentation describes a three-way demonstrative distinction: proximal, medial and remote. It includes location adverbs among its examples. Those categories concern location relative to a reference point. They should not be treated as an exact replacement table for the Finnish lesson’s visibility-based explanation. The actual place being indicated must be recovered first.

Distinguish the photographed room from the speaker’s room

Imagine a curator showing a Finnish-speaking colleague a photograph of an exhibition hall. A pointing gesture can identify a doorway within the photograph. A following comment may concern another store room that is not shown. If the Armenian version treats both references as the same visible place, it can misdescribe where an object is kept.

Physical closeness to the camera is another separate issue. A label on the curator’s desk may be near the speaker, while a label shown in the photograph belongs to the exhibition hall. Their similar appearance does not make them the same object. Keep the image context attached to any translated reference that would otherwise become unclear.

The person producing the Armenian translation should not silently adopt a new viewing position. A passage translated as the curator’s speech ordinarily retains the curator as the relevant speaker. A later written report may instead describe the scene explicitly. Decide which kind of text is being prepared before shifting a location reference to the translator’s own surroundings.

Replace an unclear pointer with established information

When a brief Finnish comment is detached from the video, a location word can lose its visible anchor. If the source identifies the doorway or room by name, retain that identification in the Armenian excerpt. Do not invent a room label solely to make an ambiguous pointer appear precise. Ask which location was intended when the evidence is insufficient.

Check any movement instruction separately from a location description. The Finnish teaching guide distinguishes being there, coming from there and going there through different forms. A translated note should not turn a statement about an object’s present storage location into an instruction to move it, or imply a journey that the curator never described.

Finally, review the Armenian text beside the actual photograph or recording. A proficient reader should be able to identify each intended place without borrowing the translator’s private knowledge. Keep the reviewed wording with that visual context when saving it, so that a later excerpt does not redirect the reference to a different room.
