Finnish to Amharic: a possessive ending does not always identify the owner’s gender or number

Finnish hänen leaves a gender choice open

A Taste of Finnish gives hänen kirjansa for his or her book and heidän kirjansa for their book. The noun’s possessive ending looks the same in these two cited phrases, while the preceding pronoun distinguishes a singular possessor from plural possessors. An Amharic translation should interpret the full expression before deciding whose book is meant.

The Finnish national promotion site explains that hän does not specify gender. Its related possessive form therefore cannot independently identify the owner as a man or woman. A message about returning someone’s book may establish that identity elsewhere, but it is not encoded merely by selecting the Finnish third-person pronoun.

Amharic can distinguish owners within its noun suffixes

Beermann and Ephrem’s study gives distinct third-person singular masculine and feminine possessive suffixes, alongside a third-person plural suffix. The paradigm includes masculine -u or -w and feminine -wa for a singular possessor. These express information about the possessor rather than a count of ownership words in the source. A Finnish noun ending shared across the cited singular-owner and plural-owner phrases cannot mechanically select one Amharic suffix.

If the Finnish message explicitly says heidän, treating the owner as a single male person would reduce several possessors to one. If it says hänen, treating it as their merely because the noun resembles the plural-owner example would create extra owners. The independent pronoun and its actual referent need to resolve that distinction.

For a singular owner, the Finnish form alone leaves gender unspecified. Where the surrounding correspondence identifies the relevant person, preserve that identification. Where it does not, a target rendering should avoid presenting a guessed owner’s gender as though it had been stated in Finnish. Repeating an established name can help clarify reference when the context supplies one.

A definite-looking suffix need not introduce another possessor

The Amharic study also documents homophony between certain definite markers and third-person possessive endings. Its zaf-u example can mean the tree or his tree, depending on the construction and context. Thus a visible target ending cannot be interpreted solely by locating a similar ending in the Finnish source.

This distinction matters when a Finnish passage refers first to someone’s book and later to an already identified object without repeating ownership. Identifiability and possession can overlap, but they are separate claims. The target should not acquire a new male owner every time its morphology includes material that can also mark definiteness.

For Finnish into Amharic, recover the possessor’s identity and number from the entire source phrase, then consider whether gender is actually known. Interpret the target possessive and definite morphology within its construction. This preserves the difference between one person’s book, several people’s book and an identifiable object whose owner is not asserted, despite the compact suffixes available in both languages.
