Filipino to Rundi: asking how is different from naming the activity

A method is not just an action turned into a noun

Zorc and Nibagwire distinguish Rundi manner nouns from verbal nouns: a way of doing something is not the same semantic category as the act itself. They list ukuuntu for method or way and ukugéne specifically for Rundi’s way of doing or the how. This distinction is useful when a Filipino source asks for an explanation of a process rather than merely mentions the activity.

In a message about studying, for example, naming study as an activity does not explain the method used. If the translation replaces a request for a method with a verbal noun alone, the reader may receive the right topic but lose the actual question. The Rundi expression needs to preserve whether the writer wants a procedure, a description of an act or information about who performed it.

Filipino interrogatives specify different missing information

The Hawaiʻi question lesson lists papaano for how, sino for who, saan for where and kailan for when. Its example Papaano nililinis ang isda asks about how fish is cleaned. It does not ask only whether the cleaning occurs. A Rundi translation should therefore invite an explanation of manner, not a confirmation or an identification of the cleaner.

This matters in instructions exchanged through a translator. A reply naming a person could be relevant to a who question but fail to answer a request for a technique. Likewise, a location can tell the reader where to go without explaining the steps of the work. The Filipino interrogative narrows what kind of information is missing before any Rundi wording is selected.

The distinction survives when a question is shortened in conversation. If the preceding sentence establishes the activity and the next asks how, the translator still needs the method relation. Repeating only the activity name can make the result sound as though the writer is asking what the activity is, rather than how to carry it out.

The way can remain the same form for more than one method

The comparative grammar shows the same ukuuntu form in singular and plural columns, with different constructions identifying the number of methods. A Filipino plural reference therefore should not be checked solely by looking for a changed ending on this Rundi noun. Other elements in the phrase can establish that several methods are involved.

This is distinct from the source question’s information type. Asking how something is done and asking how many methods there are are different requests. A translation describing a plurality of methods must not replace the method question with a numerical one unless the Filipino source actually asks for a count.

A procedure can be discussed before the event happens

The Filipino aspect lesson distinguishes an event that has not started from one completed or still incomplete. Asking about the method does not remove those distinctions: a person can request instructions before beginning or ask how somebody completed a task afterward. The Rundi rendition must preserve the source event’s setting as well as its manner question.

Thus the method relation, the number of methods and the event’s stage need separate interpretations. A sentence can correctly identify the topic as cleaning or studying yet still ask the wrong question, misstate the count or imply that a planned activity has already happened.
