Filipino to Romanian: the possessive can agree with the thing owned

My son and my daughter do not have different owners

Cojocaru’s Romanian grammar contrasts fiul meu, my son, with fiica mea, my daughter. The possessive changes with the noun it modifies, not because the speaker changes identity. In Filipino, the NIU lesson gives ko a possessive use following an owned noun. When translating such a phrase into Romanian, the source owner can remain the same while the target possessive changes its form.

This is useful in a family introduction listing relatives or belongings. A different Romanian ending is not automatically evidence that a different person owns or is related to the next item. First identify the owner in the Filipino expression; then identify the Romanian noun whose gender and number govern the relevant possessive form. These are two separate pieces of information.

His or her may need a more explicit interpretation

NIU lists niya for his or her. Romanian lui and ei can distinguish a male from a female owner, while the său series agrees with the possessed noun in the grammar’s table. Consequently, selecting a feminine-looking possessive does not always answer the question of whether the Filipino owner is female. The Romanian construction determines what the ending tells you.

A short Filipino reference to somebody’s friend may leave the owner’s identity dependent on an earlier sentence. The translation should not obtain that identity by guessing from the friend’s gender. The friend is the person related to the owner, not necessarily a clue to who the owner is. A Romanian phrase can mark those two references through different grammatical resources.

Cojocaru also distinguishes the number of owners from the number of owned objects. The table uses lor for a plural third-person owner, whereas a singular owner can have several possessions. A Filipino plural reference such as nila therefore concerns the owners’ group; it should not be treated merely as a request to make the Romanian possessed noun plural.

Ours still needs the right group of people

Filipino namin excludes the listener, while natin includes them. This distinction can identify whether a household or team mentioned as an owner contains the person receiving the message. A Romanian first-person plural possessive expression does not by itself repeat that inclusion contrast. The intended group must remain clear through the surrounding wording.

For example, a message about the speaker’s colleagues’ equipment may keep the listener outside the owning group while inviting them to use it. Including the recipient in the activity does not automatically make them a co-owner. Reading the possessive and the invitation separately preserves both relations.

A Romanian noun can carry marking that Filipino writes separately

In Cojocaru’s examples, a noun followed by a possessive adjective bears a definite article. Romanian therefore distributes information differently from the separate Filipino noun markers discussed in the Hawaiʻi lesson. A changed word boundary is not, by itself, an added or missing owner.

The Filipino lesson distinguishes personal si from ang with common and nonpersonal nouns. Neither marker directly chooses a Romanian possessive ending or a male versus female owner. Keep the source’s participant identification separate from the target noun’s article and agreement, so a compact phrase does not acquire an ownership relationship or gender claim that the source never made.
